One of the Mexican restaurants in the Point Loma- OB area is now part of a friendly wager between the mayors of San Diego and Denver over the Broncos-Chargers game this Sunday.
Interim San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has included burritos from Ortiz’s Taco Shop on Voltaire on as part of this bet.
So, if the Broncos win, Gloria will send Denver Mayor Michael Hancock a selection of Mexican food including burritos from Ortiz’s Taco Shop, carne asada fries from Lolita’s Taco Shop in Kearny Mesa and deep-fried catfish tacos from Mama Testa Taqueria in Hillcrest.
If the Broncos lose, Hancock will send Gloria a sampling of Denver’s best green chili.
That’s it? Denver’s best green chili. Gee, seems as if this bet is a little one-sided. But what the hey, it’s just a game, right?

Hey, editordude initially got it wrong, due to news reports saying that the Ortiz’s was in OB and he thought natch that Gloria was talking about Ortiz’s cochina on Newport – so that’s why there’s confusion here. Did not know that Ortiz’s Taco Shop on Voltaire was THAT good.
Me neither, Frank. Must be new cooks!
Ortiz’s on Voltaire is decent, definitely better than Nico’s on Newport and most of the other taco shops in town, but the sad fact remains that OB/Pt. Loma Mexi leaves a lot to be desired as compared to other parts of town.
I also can’t help thinking that any of these foods would be absolutely terrible after being shipped overnight and reheated – the chili (that starts off sounding unimpressive) would probably survive the journey a heckuva lot better than carne fries.
Ortiz on Voltaire has been consistently good for the five or six years I have been here. I always take out-of-towners there because the fish tacos are awesome, cheap, very consistent, and the service is great. Use the verde! Oh and Payton ALREADY KNOWS what is about to happen. He will be 0-3 lifetime vs the Chargers in the post-season Sunday night.
I’m from Denver and can tell you that the Chili Verde there is AWESOME! It’s made with mild green chilis (no tomatillos!) and pork. They use it to “smother” everything, including burritos,. enchaladas, pretty much anything on the menu. I have been unable to find the chili anywhere in San Diego. If it were here it would be a huge hit.
