A woman’s body was found floating in the ocean near the foot of Monaco Street along Sunset Cliffs.  About 12:30, Thursday, a group of surfers found the body about 100 yards offshore, in the surf.

A passerby called 911 at 12:35. Lifeguards pulled the fully-clothed body from the water.  The woman appeared to be in her mid-20’s San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson Maurice Luque told the press.

Her identity and the cause of death have not been determined.  Her body was taken to lifeguard headquarters in Mission Bay.

One report has San Diego police saying her case appears to be a suicide.

Monaco Street is about one block south of Hill Street in southwest Point Loma on the Pacific side of the Peninsula. There are several well-known surfing spots in the near vicinity.

The cliffs are notoriously dangerous and have claimed a number of victims over the years in this same area. In the early Sixties, the body of a 3-year old daughter of a local newspaper columnist was found near the foot of Monaco Street.

Friday’s U-T added this:

“Police said the 31-year-old woman left behind a journal and other evidence that led them to believe she had committed suicide.”

Tragic on so many levels….God bless the kids left behind. BTW…..The child that was found at the same spot years ago was the grandson of Jack Murphy, sports writer after whom Chargers stadium was named. As I recall, the boy’s name was Jamie.

Steve – thank you for your historical note on the history of tragedies around that same location along Sunset Cliffs. As a teen I lived close by with my parents and fairly clearly remember the child’s death. Had forgotten it was Murphy’s grandson.
