OB Torrey Pine 4300 blk Orchard mcThe OB Rag has heard of efforts to save the Torrey Pines tree that we reported was about to be cut down.  Some local neighbors of the elderly gentleman who owns the property where the tree is located together with some local tree activists are involved in talks and negotiations with a number of players around this Torry Pines.

Torrey Pines are a protected species and it is illegal to cut them down on public property within the City of San Diego.  This tree, however – which has been called ‘one of the most beautiful Torrey Pines on Point Loma’ – is located on private property, in the rear of a yard, right off the alley.

One observer stated that it is at least one hundred years old.

Those involved in efforts to save the tree are attempting to work with City Council office, the City Attorney’s Office, the landscaping company that was hired to cut it down, as well as the property owner and his neighbors.

We will post updates on this latest effort to save a Torrey Pines from being destroyed.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.
