It’s been an interesting week here at the OB Rag admin desk with three major bouts of downtime. I’ve spent a good number of hours deciphering error logs, tweaking settings and chatting with tech support.
It seems one major concern for us is the amount of comment spam that hits our server at regular intervals. We have excellent spam filters (Akismet) that keep 99.9% of this crap from showing up on the site where you, dear reader, can see it. But that doesn’t keep it from reeking havoc behind the scenes. It’s especially chaotic when we are blasted with spam from countries that use a different type of alphabet, the poor database goes through the wringer…
As much as we hate them, we have opted to install a simple CAPTCHA to our comments section. This may, or may not, be a temporary measure. The CAPTCHA is a simple math problem that asks you to complete the statement before clicking Submit.
This is one of the small changes that we are implementing to help keep the OB Rag up and running, every day, all day. Thanks for your patience and support!

What if we’re lousy at math? Like this capcha thang is asking me__ +2=6. I don’t have a clue but I’ll do anything 4 the OB Rag.

Dear Readers: please let us know how your experience goes with the CAPTCHA process when you make comments.
Well, since I had just had a manicure I had to take off my shoes to count the 5+2=. But…the nail polish didn’t smear, so the CAPTCHA must have worked ok. The problem to submit this comment was a little harder – — – ? – 2 + 7? But, having 10 toes, I was able to figure it out.
Readers: as you may know by now, we were under serious attack for most of the day in denial of service. Our server host had to suspend us until a half hour ago, ~8pm.
Wasn’t sure if 9-5 was 4, 5 or 6 so I asked my husband. Very glad to see you all back.
OH Great Now I have to do math to post a negative comment ??
For all the Ocean Beach commenter s all the math they know is
4+2=’s 0 or FourPlusTwoEqual’szero…..
Well, at least you haven’t lost your humor … cough, cough.
