A new poll out shows that in San Diego’s mayoral race, Congressman Bob Filner and City Councilman Carl DeMaio are in a statistical tie for first place, each with about a quarter of respondents’ votes.
The poll – conducted for KGTV by SurveyUSA between January 30 and February 3 – shows DeMaio with 25% and Filner with 24% – a tie as the poll of only 511 likely voters has a margin of error of 4.4%.
The other high-profile candidates include District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis who garnered 14% and state Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher who received 13%. Nearly a quarter of respondents picked “other” or were undecided.
Filner had the most support among Democrats with 38 percent choosing him. And according to the poll, Filner – the only high-profile and prominent Democrat in the race, had more Republican support – 15% – than Dumanis with 12%.
Among Republicans, DeMaio has 35% and Fletcher had 19%. DeMaio did have more support from independents than the other candidates, and won among those who identified their politics as as conservative or moderate while Filner won those who identified themselves as liberal.
The Primary is on June 5th. And if there is no clear winner, then the top two go at it in the November General Election.
There has been a lot of speculation recently in the local media about how Filner needs to get his campaign going – as he has raised the least amount of campaign funds. However, this poll shows that it’s going quiet well, thank you very much.

Just imagine what might happen if Filner actually got out and CAMPAIGNED for the job!
I agree with Andy Cohen. Where is Filner???? What is really scary is that the percentages going to Dumanis and Fletcher will most likely go to DeMaio.

Thanks in advance to OBRag for printing a differing point of view. Filner is a very important candidate in the d & r party debates to the 1% because he has fooled so many with his progressive label. Owning up and answering up is not part of his tactical plan. The more the progressives cry wolf at demaio, the less filner, the fox has to answer for. That is precisely why Lorena Gonzalez wrote the anti–demaio article. If this guy is that bad, I got to vote for the other guy, what’s his name? Clever, not so clever, fact, he abstained on NDAA. Would be voters aren’t trapped in this vicious, tweedle dee tweedle dum, cycle, they trap themselves.
It is the power of mass movements and mass actions, alone, that can confront and change/make history…not law makers or enforcers with badges or robes. The dumping of prop 8 which, by the way, never had a majority, in that the percentage of none voting voters and non registered potential voters skews any total. So, the majority were not against gay marriage, after all. That’s the real truth. The, in your face and in the streets marches and rallies and independent political action, by the glbt community and huge numbers of supporters scared the black robes. That is the lesson needed in any fake choice election. We can decide our future no matter who is in office. they need us, we don’t need them or their apparatchex.
Filner is pro capitalist, pro pentagon war machine, pro armed to the teeth, Israel, a progressive liberal imperialist. He marched with Dr. King, what did he learn except to remain silent while an imperialist supply ship, here in San Diego, is christened after Medgar Evers. Why not an aircraft carrier named u.s. s. dr.martin luther king? Is filner different than demaio? Hell yes, but only in form not content. Neither has an alternative. Tax the rich and the wealthy, of course but that ain’t the answer…don’t tax workers, wage earners…how’s that?
Railroad tracks always go the same direction–one on the right, one on the left. Whether it’s a right turn, ahead, or a left turn the rails are parallel; they travel in the same direction, always. This is the electoral system of hold your nose and vote. Really? Really!
What occupy has demonstrated is that independence from the twin parties has value with huge numbers seeking a way to a choice that isn’t rigged. Who doesn’t know we lose no matter who is elected?
Want to be heard? Want to head toward power? Want to curtail their power? Break free….continue the movement..a pox on both their houses….that doesn’t leave us powerless…it’s the beginning of collective independence and interdependence too.
And that means liberty of the highest order. It’s when the vast majority head in the opposite direction….occupy the train, change direction, lay new rails if necessary and start heading towards a future worth fighting for.
These candidates don’t represent us, we are far better off with Occupy the ballot and 200 write in candidates (how about all those arrested), it’s very simple paperwork. Imagine the horror from the two camps…they are leaving us in droves and we are melting, melting, oh what a world.
Flex some mental muscle, political muscle, what’s to fear? Fear itself. Just check out our women of Occupy, everywhere. Fear, what fear?

Do you think whoever wins should face a recall election in a few months?
Consider the effect on the political process. The newly elected official would have to beg for more money from his supporters. The candidates wouldn’t have had time to pay off political debts.
The supporters might drag their feet and a wild card, low budget candidate could win.
Either way, the job becomes less profitable.

Whatever plan, from our side (yours and others–there’s a huge amount of brain power memes–out there needing to get on board), the the masses ( registered, not registered, voting , not voting, abstaining, or going through the drill), by their participation, can effect changes. Beginning, in this instance, with, their (1%) elections–their (1%) political process. It ain’t our process. [Who can possibly conceive of choice between arsenic and cesium, as a standard for decision making? That ain’t a choice. This political process, which you correctly identify, is injected and perfected from maternity ward to law school.
So, if your plan is independent of their process, and I am assuming you are serious, then it amounts to a tactic to undue the shackles.
But, if a huge number were to begin to register or re-register and vote from that political location (vantage /advantage point) as independents (not Independent Party), think of the consequences of the tallies and the perennial, ya gotta vote to be a real citizen. Not to mention the BS primaries–just a diversion to seal the deal for their electoral magic act. Throw in a number of write in candidates, from our side, the more the better (remember, it’s just a few signatures on a pe[iece of paper for the Registrar of Voters and your name goes on a candidates list that has to, by law, be presented at the polls) and identified as such on the Net and viola!!!! Now that’s an alternative, a beginning, a real protest vote saying none of the above, a revenge, at last an X on ballots that have to be tabulated—get my drift here? To be followed, of course by the predictable huge outcry from the establishment (that’s what the 1% used to be called). This is bad for everyone (meaning them), this is a trick from Occupy, this is impossible, there will be too many candidates (remember when Arnold ran, how many candidates?), the voters will be totally confused, anarchy, etc. etc.
First break free, end the dependency–breathe in the fresh independent air feel the euphoria as the political Oxygen clears the head and sinuses, look around and really smell liberty…then go out and pursue it, with the millions we know are out there, with guidance from, say, Bob Marley, Lady Ga Ga, Tlingit philosophy, the Zapatistas, Hummus, tamales, ham and eggs (what ever) and no new football stadium. Getting out the vote is important. So is prevention of election fraud. So are many other things. I wish I could devote time to teaching Occupiers listening and communication skills.
Excuse me for gloating, but I am so happy to see that D.A. Bonnie Dumanis is fading away in this Mayoral race. Now I know it’s early & anything can still happen but all her stupid PR stunts like going after the South Bay Sweetwater 5, who may be just as crooked as she is, seems to have backfired on her. Instead of sending the Dirty D.A. surging ahead of the other 2 well-entrenched Republican candidates, Bogus Bonnie is losing steam fast. I think I can see the end of her ambitious, political-climbing agenda sinking faster than the Titanic after it hit that iceberg. Since clumsy Dumanis probably is so out of tune with reality, she cannot see the writing on the wall. When that craven politico is finally put out to pasture, I would like to send a nice bottle of champagne to the OB Rag. May those of you there who are not on the wagon, enjoy the bubbly for all the hard work you have done on behalf of the San Diego community, by getting the Good Word out about the abomination of justice–Dumbanus.
