Gay for Good San Diego (G4G) is looking for volunteers to participate in its next community service project to take place Sunday, Dec. 18, at 9 am.
Volunteers will work with the San Diego River Park Foundation to help them replant the Point Loma Native Plant Garden, which houses many rare and endangered native plants. The foundation says that some plants in the collection are unique to the region, and are not found naturally anywhere else in the world.
Chapter leaders say that by participating in the project and visiting the garden, volunteers will get a glimpse of what San Diego looked like over 100 years ago, before palm trees and grass lawns became a part of the Southern California landscape.
Gay for Good is a nationwide community service organization which engages members of the LGBT community in volunteer projects outside of the traditional “gayborhoods.” The San Diego chapter was formed in July 2010 and organizes a service project each month.
Since its founding, the local group has participated in a several projects, including beach cleanups, community garden restoration, serving the homeless, and supporting the San Diego Food Bank. G4G San Diego has engaged over 300 volunteers in service projects.
Those who wish to participate in Sunday’s project should wear close-toed shoes and be prepared to get dirty. Tools and supplies will be provided.
Volunteers must RSVP on G4G’s website and complete a waiver.
The Point Loma Native Plant Garden is part of the City of San Diego’s Collier Park West, located at Mendocino and Greene Streets in Ocean Beach.
