This Saturday at The Vault

On Saturday, July 30th, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, Jack Gialanella, a licensed and certified Senior Full Instructor in Rapid Assault Tactics, will be teaching a free seminar geared toward bouncers and bar staff. The seminar will take place at the Vault Combat Academy Mixed Martial Art Training and Fitness gym, located inside the Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Shop, at 4976 Newport Ave. in Ocean Beach.

Gialanella has over ten years experience as a crisis intervention specialist, and has trained police, federal agents, FBI SWAT, and military personnel in close quarter combat. Currently, he is a full-time trainer who provides on-call security and bouncing services.

During this introductory seminar, Gialanella will provide crisis intervention training, arrest and control tactics, as well as use-of-force legal concerns. If time allows, he will also provide an introduction to lethal threat response and weapon awareness conditioning.

According to Gialanella, “All experienced security and bouncing staff know that prevention of violence is extremely important for both tactical and legal reasons.” To address this need, the “seminar will begin with an introduction to the same crisis intervention and situational awareness principles taught by ITR to police forces in order to keep critical incident reports at a minimum while retaining maximum professionalism in the face of volatile patrons.”

After the informational overview, participants will have the opportunity to experience—and practice—passive force, pain compliance, and ballistic defense combat tactics.

After this initial free seminar, future classes are available on an individual or group basis. Restaurants and bars may also sign up for one-time employee packages. According to Head Muay Thai Instructor Phillip Gordon, “Staying healthy and sharp is paramount for your occupation. You don’t have to be a fighter to train like one!”

The Police Department supports professional procedural training, according to Western Division Community Relations Officer David Surwilo. “Any training is always good training,” he stated, “especially as it relates to protocols, standards, responsibility, and behavior. Bouncers, doormen, and other staff who develop martial arts skills learn about restraint, control holds, pressure points, and maneuvering, all of which assist with job performance.”

Surwilo added that many of Ocean Beach’s bars have good security systems, so staff and patrons know that they’re being watched and recorded. In addition to this, bar owners realize that it is “in their favor to hire intelligent trained people.

For more information, and to register for this free seminar, please contact Phillip Gordon, Muay Thai instructor, at 619-665-7677, via email at phillip@vaultmuaythai.com, or visit their website: www.vaultmuaythai.com.

I’d be there if I was a bouncer or bar staff! I just like to go to bars on occasion. . .
