Update on the Ocean Beach VFW Post

A meeting was held on Friday regarding the status of the VFW. As of yet, there does not seem to be any other available building in the 92107 area code. They only have a few days (?) left to move into the Pt. Loma facility, without jeopardizing their liquor license.

I do not know if this is fact – or fiction – but I was told that the rent for the Pt. Loma facility is next to nothing and the agreement was that the VFW would fix it up using their own monies.

Although this is not in writing, I understand (and, again, I may be wrong) the VFW agreed not to serve liquor for the time being, but moving into the facility will give them 6 months to find another location and their license will not be suspended.

I also heard from the same source that somewhere – maybe under a rock or something – over $20,000 has appeared to help them make the bar functional. It was suggested that rather than spend the monies on fixing the bar up, that they pay $12,000 to find another place in a nearby zip code area – 92109, for example. And, again, I do not know if that is the truth, but the neighbors seem to think that it is.

The VFW does not want any trouble; they do not want to fight the neighbors; they merely want a place that their members can meet and enjoy the companionship afforded by such a place. It has been noticed that improvements are already taking place, and, since the landlady has said that she won’t fix it up, it goes without saying that the improvements must be taking place by the VFW.

So…that’s the latest on the street. More if it develops.

Judi-Please stop. The “Point Loma” facility that you repeatedly refer to is fully within the census, planning and political jurisdiction of Ocean Beach! Try to be more honest in your advocacy on this issue of the OCEAN BEACH Vietnam Veterans Memorial Post 1392 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (as in VFW) in the the O.B.(as in OCEAN BEACH) Rag. If you want to use the 92107 zip code to push the Point Loma agenda on Ocean Beach then go to the O.B. Town Council. That is who they are and what they do!

danny do you live in OB?

Zip codes or not its point loma. Ocean Beach is where the beach is, where the cliffs begin is “Point Loma”. Period.

the cliffs and the hill are point loma since they are actually a formation of land called a “point” and this particular one is named “loma”, or hill because of the large hill that makes up the point. You can call it OB for zoning purposes or to create a useless argument but it is what it is.

BOBob – the cliffs actually begin at the Pier – which everyone knows is in OB. So, you’re off by a mile. Plus Danny knows, as he has been on the OB Planning Board, that Ocean Beach extends formally to Adair Street – one block south of Pt Loma Ave. So, “period” to you too, dude.

Frank the cliffs are part of the point. Period.Period.

Does “Point Loma” Begin south of pier? Yep. Is the hillside south of sunset cliffs part of the point? Yep.

Obviously most of Ocean Beach is part of “Point” Loma. And parts of the point are in the area of “OB”. Semantics. But why attack Judy? Your commitees and boards may have some say over what happens in our neighborhood but it doesnt change that its point loma. When the street itself is called Point Loma you’d think you might “get it”?

Frank-Thank you for willingness to get dirty when wrestling w/trolls who continue to use willful ignorance as a tactic. “Its who they are and what they do!” Why? As you know, when the facts are on your side, argue the facts. When the law is on your side, argue the law. When neither, pound on the table. Guess who loves you baby?-Allison

Ah! I had to read that acouple of times to understand: yeah, I agree, the Ocean Beach Town Council pushes a Point Loma agenda! LOL!. Actually, that’s putting PL down, as the OBTC agenda is one pushed by a small bunch of people who enjoy their crony-ism, and are not very democratic.

Well…it’s a free county tis it not? VFW has a lease, a license and money to do renovations. Then I guess they are in business!

It reminds me of the origin of Starbucks on Newport…..personally I thought once a Starbucks got plunked on an OB corner, OB would be over run with Yuppies (if that is even a term anymore) but that didn’t happen. While I personally don’t care for Starbucks, they are here in OB so I am going with the flow. People over by Pt. Loma Ave. you will have to do the same. If laws are broken in your neck of the neighborhood then you can may rant and rave…otherwise be thankful that that corner is getting spruced up. Maybe the people in this neighborhood should be more upset with the landlord who let it sit for so long vacant and unkept and too cheap to fix it up and make it attract a viable business?
