Our hidden and invisible citizen reporters are everywhere. Thursday, August 13th witnessed a watermain break on Bolinas Street in northeast Ocean Beach.
Here are early a.m. scenes from that street. Hopefully, the spilled water will be used to water Collier Park, just down from this area.
There has been a lot of water flowing down the gutters of OB over this last year as city crews work to repair and replace our aged pipes, put in by Roman slaves centuries ago. But none of it is recyceled, as it’s just allowed to go with the flow – OB’s nature – into the water sewers.

Unfortunately for Collier Park all of the water’s hanging a left on Greene St. and heading down the hill more or less flooding the intersection of Greene & Etiwanda, still was as of 1:45 p.m.
The water didn’t make it down Etiwanda toward Castelar, it must have gone down a storm drain somewhere.
I’m going to have to retract what I said about “all of the water heading down Greene”.
On closer inspection it went both left and right at Greene from Bolinas and also from what it looks like, a lot of water forked it’s way across Greene and headed North down the gutter in front of Collier Park too.
Everything was pretty dry by 3 p.m. and the S.D. water crews had the water main fixed and water back on to everyone shortly thereafter. Good job!
It looks like a lot of the water ran down the gutter on Soto Street past Collier Park and down the storm drain at Soto and Castelar Streets.
wireless mike and dave – thanks for following up (or is it down?) on this – no pun intended. i’m certain by the time the water hit the ocean – as it was flowing down the storm drain – it was very dirty. hey, fish and surfers – here it comes! watch out! you’re on your own, btw.
this brings up a beef (vegy?) of mine: water re-capture – during all the drain and pipe construction in OB over these last months (has it been years?) there was really no effort to capture all the h20 that gushed out. it wasn’t even thought of it appears, which is funny when you think of all the PR that is done to get us all to save water.
I’d like to say I saw the culpret hit the fire hydrant the night before in a small toyota pick up. I didn’t think anyone noticed this street. lol
