Best in Show - "Surfer" Joe Ewing
OCEAN BEACH, CA. At long last, we have all the winning photos from the OB Historical Society’s contest and exhibit from last weekend. The contest was held Friday, May 15th, at the Masonic Temple (see our earlier post), and the winners were announced that night.
Here are the winners and the titles:
Best B&W - “Cliffs & Pier, NW Swell, High Tide” Roderick Michener
Best Vintage - “Girls Gone Wild” John Ayres
Best Color - “Cliffhanger“ Bryce Johnson
Best Special Effects - “OB Pier” Kathleen Blavatt
People’s Choice - “OB Pier” Emily Sales

great shots! congratulations to all the winners.
Just look at the colors – the green and the blue sea – in Ewing’s “Surfer” – amazing pic. They’re all amazing.
But listen, OB Historical Society photo judges – here’s a suggestion: 4 out of the 6 winning photos have the OB Pier in them, and 5 have the Pacific Ocean in them. How about just one category for the Pier next year, and have photographers take other subjects besides the ocean, surfers and the pier.
… and oh, the reason the pier wasn’t in the 5th photo was because IT HADN’T BEEN BUILT YET!
Does anyone see what I’m saying?
I endorse Molly’s suggestion to make a separate category for pier photos. While the pier is certainty OB’s most visible icon there is much more to be appreciated. A separate category would drive a little attention to other views.
love the b&w under the pier…all beautiful shots! i agree though, where are the picture of dog beach, newport, wildflowers, street shots, etc?

It was probally our most well attended OB Exposed ever!

It’s a wonderful feeling connecting long time OB folks with each other, as well as new residents with the history of the community.
Suggestions for a calender and a new pier catagory are good and will be brought up at our next board meeting.

Somebody I failed to mention in my earlier post who was a important part of OB Exposed is Steve Rowell.
Steve brought out some of his photos that he took during the 60s and 70s.
His collection is always a big hit.
They make me nostalgic since they depict the Ocean Beach I knew when I first moved here.
One shot shows a cottage that he an I lived in (at different times) which is no longer there.
He also lived where I live now.
OB is a small town with a great sense of community!

Pat – When are the OBHS meetings? Every 3rd Thurs.? I was given a really cool antique photo of OB for my birthday by someone who has lived in the area for a very long time. I would really like to know more about it.
Yes, our meetings are third Thursday every month usually at the Pt. Loma Methodist Church on the corner of Saratoga and Sunset Cliffs at 7pm.
This is also where we house our archives.
You don’t have to be a member to attend!
But if you would like to join, we’ll send you our newsletter and meeting announcements so you will be sure not to miss any of our events.

Thanks for the info Pat. $12.00 seems pretty reasonable for an annual membership. That’s about the price of a latte at starbucks nowadays right?
It is reasonable – a buck a month not bad, we like to keep our membership up.
I hope you’ll consider joining we have some really interesting programs.

Congrats to everyone….especially Ewing! I now live in Hawaii, but had a place near the foot of Saratoga for a long time. Miss O.B. and truly miss the artists who capture it’s beauty and uniqueness. MAHALO!
