Kristina Lee of Fox News Is Interviewing Me Right At this Moment – Watch Ch.5 at 10pm Tonight

OCEAN BEACH, CA.  Kristina Lee of Fox News is interviewing me at this very moment. Watch me at 10 PM at FOX 5 – CH. 5. Her report emphasizes the use of blogs and social websites in politics and activism. I hope she got my good side.

Frank Gormlie
A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. Yea Frank, great to see you are still at it! I wish I could watch it, but can’t get it up here in Oregon. Haven’t seen you since ’77 and those great old days of OBCPG and creating the OB Planning Board. Glad to know OB is still OB. Also, now we have a president who also was a “Community Organizer” so maybe we’ll finally see some progress, So what do you all think of the success Richard Louv- who wrote “The Far End of America, a book about Ocean Beach, California” back in ’75, is having with his idea of “Nature Deficit”, to get kids back to nature? Great, get em to the tide pools, look but don’t touch…… Remember when they wanted to backfill from the beach to the top of Sunset Cliffs to save the houses, and we called it “Sloping in to the Sunset”?
Hurrah for all of you, Frank and others, for keeping the faith! Doug Card, now Eugene Oregon

  2. So….just so I’m clear on this. We aren’t going to let Sanders ride in our parade this year right??? Impeach Sanders….no Natzis in OB.

If that jerk closes my library…I got no place to post these wonderful comments.

-keepin it weird since ever since

  3. Hey Doug Card, great to hear from you! Remember the Common Ground days? Didn’t you sit on the first OB Planning Board? Activism in OB goes up and down. Did you ever hear about Ocean Beach Grassroots Organization (OBGO)?
Dinner is calling – more later.

  4. Hey Frank Gormlie, You seem to be everyplace, yes, save the OB community library for sure! Our period of 8 years of ignorance is about over. Yup, I was on that first OB Planning Board as part of the OBCPG 8-6 majority, along with some really great people–Tom Kozden, Rich Cornish, Mary Ann Zounes, Lars Tollefson, Doris Frank, Chris Bystrom, and Phil Elsbree (you were just a few votes short); with this majority and the support of the OB Rag we really were able to “Save OB” at that time 32 years ago; but it takes continuous work, so congratulations to all of you who are still working to keep it as that Very Special Place. We emigres will never forget it. Doug

  5. Doug – okay, what a memory! Richard Lou went on to become a famous writer, but have not read his book. Is there an implied criticism of his point in your earlier comment?
I have visited Eugene a couple of times in last 5 years, but did not know you lived there.
Yes, the original Community Planning Group slate. I think our majority was larger though. Tom Kozden moved to the Bay Area, changed his name and now is big with the Mayor, Rich Cornish became an RN, married now with two grown daughters and lives in the South Bay; not certain what happened to Mary Ann – she did stay in OB for a long time, owned some units on Muir and Cable which her sons managed; Lars disappeared into career land; Doris Frank – god bless her – dunno; sadly Chris Bystrom died in some kind of accident in Australia, after he had made a career making surfing movies; Phil Elsbree and wife bought a local Bed & Breakfast on Niagara Street near the pier.
What are you up to these days?

  6. Yo Frank again- Yes, Luov has gone on to become very successful, and I didn’t mean to imply any criticism of his writing, for I love his theme of getting kids back out in Nature, which has become a huge part of my life here in Oregon. I’ve been in Eugene for years, just retired from teaching sociology at the UO. Also just wrote a book on local history, “From Camas to Courthouse.”
Thanks for the update on all the old OBCPGers, those were heady times and fascinating people, sad to hear about Chris the surfer and Lars the careerist; maybe some of the other folks reading this will remember some of those days and those names. Our CPG 8-6 Planning Board margin over Pen-Inc is accurate, not because of my memory, but because I still have a bunch of CPG and PB material I brought with me to Oregon, even the tapes of some of the big hearings. I should get it down to the OB Historical society.
I do remember the Common Ground days, but more on the talking than the action, we lost big in the City Council Race with Ralph Anievis. And yes, I have been watching the OB Grassroots organization, great work, activism will never die in OB! Doug
