It is said that converts to a religion can be more zealous than those born into a religion. Perhaps the same applies to people who did not get to grow up in Ocean Beach but have moved here and won’t go away. I may not be a native OBecian but I sure think OB is fantastic and it isn’t just the ocean, good bars and dog beach. It’s the OB attitude that makes everything else so good.

Ask OB Convert: “I still haven’t found a job in OB.”

Dear OB Convert:

I have wanted to move to this beachy hippie haven for sometime now. After I graduated I was sure I would be able to find a job in OB where I could ride my bike to work and wherever life takes me. Sadly, having graduated from college this past spring I still haven’t found a job in OB.

OB Convert: When is it a good time to give money to the homeless?

Dear OB Convert:

The other day I noticed someone throwing something at a homeless guy standing at one of our intersections near the freeway. The homeless guy had a sign (I didn’t see it to read it) And no, it wasn’t cash thrown – it was trash. I’m confused. I thought OBcians were tolerant and caring people. So, my question: just when is it safe to give money to the homeless at these intersections?

Confused OBcian

Dear Confused: We in OB have had a lot of discussion about the homeless

OB Convert: Confronting the Political Divide Across the Fence

Dear OB Convert,

I recently moved next to a pair of conservatives. While I wasn’t expecting everyone in OB to be fun-loving hippies, I certainly wasn’t expecting such a great political divide to form so close to home. Should I have that conversation, or should I look the other way?

Dear Politically Divided,

Oh, I so feel your pain! It is very dismaying to learn that even OB is riddled with more conservatives than we’d wish for. Unfortunately, instead of being frightened away by our eccentric little town, conservatives seem to want to sterilize it and make it into La-OB-Jolla.

OB Convert: Bathing Suit or Naked at the Y shower?

OB Convert  January 24, 2011  7 Comments on OB Convert: Bathing Suit or Naked at the Y shower?

Dear OB Convert: Hi, I just joined the Peninsula YMCA and think it’s great. But very few women seem to use the locker room. Instead, they go home after working out. The women who do use the locker room are swimmers and many keep their swimsuits on to shower!

Is there an unwritten rule I don’t know about? I’m from Sweden originally and realize Americans view nudity differently but do I need to get in to a swimsuit to shower?
