Fight at OB’s Seawall Wednesday Night Turned Deadly — Police Searching for Suspect

A fight at OB’s famous seawall turned deadly deadly Wednesday night, Oct. 28, authorities said.

Police responded around 8:30 pm to a report of an injured person near Abbott Street and Newport Avenue, and found a critically injured man believed to be in his 50s. He was taken to a hospital where he later died from his injuries. Neither he nor the suspected assailant have been publicly identified.

SDPD Lt. Christopher Leahy, with the Homicide Unit, said witnesses told officers that the victim and another individual were involved in a verbal argument that escalated into a physical altercation. The fight is believed to have occurred at the low-slung seawall at the foot of Newport Avenue. It’s not clear yet whether some kind of weapon was used, or even who was the instigator.

Police say the suspect was last seen traveling eastbound on the 5000 block of Newport Avenue. Police are searching for the individual and there is an active investigation into the incident.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim’s cause of death.

SDPD’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police or call Crime Stoppers at 619-235-8477.

  1. My condolences to the victim’s friends and family. Violence occurs far too often in OB after dark on “farmers market” Wednesdays.

  2. We live on Abbott and I cannot recall a Wednesday in years where the sirens did not start like clockwork when the sun goes down.

Condolences to any family/friends of the poor man who was killed. Hope they find the murderer quickly.
