Pedestrian Killed Saturday Night in the Midway District

A 51-year-old male pedestrian died Saturday, May 10, after being struck by a car in the Midway District. The as-yet-to-be identified man was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk in the 3400 block of Sports Arena Boulevard.

Police responded to the scene just minutes before 11 pm and determined that the victim was walking from the south curbline to the north curbline. He was struck by a Toyota Camry driven by a 22-year-old man.

Speed and driving under the influence were determined not to be factors in this collision. Apparently the pedestrian walked into the path of the Toyota and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The department’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation of the collision and anyone with information related to it was asked to call 858- 495-7800 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

  1. This is what happens when unthinking politicians decriminalize jaywalking and allow people to cross streets wherever they wish.

The “Freedom to Walk Act” (AB 2147) allowed pedestrians to cross the street outside of marked crosswalks without facing a jaywalking citation, as long as it is safe and there’s no immediate danger of a collision. This law was passed in 2022 and became effective in 2023.

Apparently in this case, and so many other, it was not safe to do so.
