The Widder Curry: ‘An Explanation … and a Rant!’

Judi Curry has been a resident of South OB for decades.

Since the holiday season I have received a few calls from readers of the Rag asking if I am okay. Several of the callers have said that they have missed my writings, so perhaps because I feel like a volcano getting ready to explode, I thought I should do two things – explain my lack of writings, and rant over the situation facing the United State!

In March of 2024 while asleep one night I had a stroke. Unfortunately because it happened while I was asleep I did not have enough time to get to the hospital for the injection that is what they give stroke victims within a time period to lesson the effects of the stroke. And, it turned out that I went blind in the left eye.

The eye doctor said there was a small chance that I would regain sight in that eye by six months; almost no chance after that.  Sad to say I am now blind in the left eye.  The results are terrifying – had to sell my car because I can’t see well enough to drive; have to depend on others – or Uber – to get places; there is no tracking of the two eyes together and so I do not see things on the left side of my body.

That can be dangerous because I have three large dogs that were taught to walk on the left side.  I can see 20/30 out of the right eye, so am learning how to live differently.  I want to thank everyone that has stepped in and give me support.

But, unfortunately, I am still able to see, read, listen to the “Fall of the United States.” And I am so worried for the younger generations.

I have 20 grandchildren; I am so worried about them. I am so concerned about the US population.  I have been an educator all my life.  I was a Principal in Poway; a Principal in San Ysidro; a Manager at San Diego Job Corps; a Director at both Job Corps in Bangor, Maine and Treasure Island; I have been an assistant Professor at San Diego State; at UCSD; at USD; and others.

In every incidence I have worked with immigrants, people that came to the US to better themselves.  I have learned so much from these people as well as what I have learned from the homeless. Not all of these people are hoodlums as Trump and his shadow Musk would like you to believe.  Have you ever been to Northern California when the fruits are ripe and those are the people picking and sorting the fruit?  Have you ever seen more than a few white people picking the fruit? Hell no!  The white people are telling the minorities what to do.

Look what has happened to the Forest Rangers. One man wrote that he worked a job in the cold snowy park until 3:30, and he was fired before 4:00 on the same day.  His computer was shut down by the Trump teams and he could not get any of his information, both personal and business wise from the computer any more.

What about the nuclear workers that were fired only to find out that they were the key to safety but the Trump team didn’t save any of personnel information so did not know how to let them know that they had been “unfired.” (Trumps’ team word – not mine.)

What about shutting down the Department of Education? I have two great-grandchildren that are working on their Ph.D’s.  Will the be able to complete their work?  I have 3 great-grandchildren that haven’t started school yet.  And a slew of grandchildren that are going to public schools now.  What is going to happen to them? What is going to happen to those children when – or if – they graduate? And not just MY family. EVERYFAMILY IN THE US.

And shutting down USAID?  Those people are some of the most needy in the world. It isn’t their fault they have been unable to find jobs; One of the biggest chores of USAID is providing disaster relief  for HIV, malaria, TB; provide relief from contaminated water and support economic developers in struggling nations.  How many of the people getting relief from USAID are going to die? And all because of Trump and Musk and his cronies.

I could go on and on.

We, as educators, did a poor job in teaching our students what the United States stands for.  People like Trump, a felon, and Musk, the richest man in the world, do not think it is necessary to follow any rules that they have not written.

The fact that some congressmen/congresswomen think that Trump should be elected to a third term make me very nauseous.  I have a birthday this week and I know that I will not be around to see Trump take on another term of office.  I am hopeful that he goes before I do, and soon.  And don’t get me started on Vance, another unintelligent individual that thinks he can berate the officials of other countries without the knowledge of what he is even talking about.

Stupidity is the key to this regime; lack of testicles for the Republican congress is a close second.  What a sad, sad state

  1. This morning I heard that Trump has begun firing FAA officials, particularly those air traffic controllers. That are responsible for safe landings and takeoffs. When you look at the three accidents regarding aircraft in the last week, you can’t help but wonder why these people are being fired instead of more people being hired! Oops! Here I go again.

  2. Glad to see you writing and speaking up and wish you strength, support, and good health in the days ahead. Please take care, and know that many people, myself included, are thinking of you and rooting for your well-being!

    1. Thanks Amit. In a way I feel like I let you down because what you stand for Is so admirable. I read, you reports, particularly about SeaWorld, all the time. Thank you for your good wishes.

  3. Bless you, Judy for all you are, have been, and will be….great! Thanks for the column/rant and for all your columns. Keep writing or dictating into a recorder. We need your strength now. Be safe.

    1. Thank you. Heard about social security today and the IRS tax forms. The wheels are grinding in my head! I have not said this before

  4. And it’s going to get so much worse but you know that, don’t you Judi? Oh my yes, the depths the wealthy right wingers can sink to is a place intelligent people with critical thinking skills just cannot understand. We cannot ‘walk in their shoes’ because the rancid stink would make us puke our guts out.

Of course the wealthy right wing corporate-owned Democrats are just as much at fault. Empire builders don’t seem to know much about the history of empires for some reason.

As for MAGA, this is what a country gets when the owners want ignorant drones to serve their queen (or in this case, king). Since 1981 the dumbing down of US education has been quite effective. Reagan’s true legacy has been creating the Country of Stupid. I’m still arguing with people that tariffs are NOT paid by the countries that they are pointed at…and they don’t get it because Trump told them he was taxing them not us. Indeed a cult, all the earmarks are there.

Big sigh. And we do what we can. I’ll keep posting info until the RAG gets shut down for being ‘unamerican’ I guess.

    Best to you as always.

  5. Sadly, I have no words of comfort for The Widder Curry, for the atrocities rendered upon our Nation are beyond any nightmare I could dream. But as a child growing up in fear of Russian nuclear bombs and a World War 2 style armed invasion in the 1950s, I am more seriously envisioning that 2024 movie “Civil War” that streamed on Amazon Prime.

As a young anthropology student in the 1960s and 70s, I found myself examinng the Fall of the Roman Empire in relation to the Unted States of America and how such a tragedy could unfold here with barbarians storming the capitol and overhwhelming the National Guard and Capitol police. But never in the 1960s-70s would I believe that American citizens would elect such a corrupt and ignorant person, nor could I envision an equally morally corrupt Supreme Court majority would authorize stripping down the federal government to the whims of an un-elected fascist who could walk into Fort Knox and steal us blind.

    1. Good to hear from you. I think back to the 1960’s and my beginning teaching days and never could I believe that any of the hundreds of students that i met could vote for the idiot that is now the President. Granted they were youngsters then but today their age range shows votes for Trump. I wonder how many of those voters have all ready been fired by Musk and/or Trump. The polls today said that 58% of Republicans think Trump is doing a good job. Nauseating. The firings, the shutting down, tarriffs that WE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE will pay for -not the other countries, etc. the shutting down social security; getting all the IRS information …and i can go on and on. Its a horrendous beginning to a 4 year term!

  6. Judy, Trump succeeded in destroying our news media system, labeling it as “fake news” and so many of our fellow citizens now do not watch a news show or read a newspaper. These people get their “news” from the Internet, where lies live and AI will soon make everything false or artificially generatedThat gave him the ability to do whatever he pleases as he blasts the foundation of our country out from underneath us. As a fellow retired educator this deeply saddens me. Hopefully the courts will throw out all of his illegal and unconstitutional efforts. As a society, I can foresee our eventual doom, either by implosion or takeover by a foreign power taking advantage of a clueless population.

  7. Hi Judi, glad to read you are on the mend, carving out a new way to view, see, and react! As Buffett said, “getting old is not for sissies”, and we are not sissies! Nationally, as Boomers, tbh, our responses/reactions have been frankly underwhelming, and I have been disappointed at the complacency of my generation. My hope is that we’ll continue to speak out and speak up, those of us in the fringes of today’s power. Whether its vote with your dollar, boycott what you disagree with, or pitching up at municipal events, we can support our younger generations by refusing the ‘new normal”. good chi your way, and thx for speaking out! :-)

    1. Thanks for your encouragement. A person listening to the news on an hourly basis could become a babbling idiot just listening to Trump. Today he berated the president of Ukraine for “starting the war” when in fact, the president of Russia started the war. Stupidity. does not belong at the White House in this case it is so blatant that ieven dumb people recognize it. How the Republicans keep supporting him after only one month in office, is criminal .
