In response to the U-T article about San Diego mayor going on 8-day visit to the Philippines (Feb. 12), I have to say this story raises as many questions as it answers, and I trust your reporters will keep digging for the details.

When will Mayor Gloria’s office provide documentation confirming he paid the full cost of his travel?

Why did the mayor need two members of his police security detail to accompany him on this trip? It’s hard to imagine a security threat during a friendly visit to a friendly country.

How much did we pay for those bodyguards to protect the mayor?

Why were their travel costs paid from the “Executive Police Department” budget?

Most importantly, why did the mayor keep this trip a secret?

He frequently boasts about his “outreach” efforts, including trips to Washington, D.C., Mexico City and China.

Why was this “official travel” kept under wraps until your reporter found out about it?

  1. Todd Gloria gets smaller by the day. This was a vanity junket, pure and simple, a salve to his ego and a display of colossal arrogance. He seems hell-bent on squandering what little political capital he has left. The headline on today’s lead U-T editorial “Mayor’s maddening error,” captures how much he seems to have lost his bearings. I almost feel sorry for him. His lame-duck years will be a downward spiral of increasing irrelevance.

  2. I hope those who voted for Toddler intelligence level Gloria are happy with their choice. You had the opportunity to stop the wasteful spending of your tax dollars, but you voted him in again. No whining from the circus peanut gallery.

  3. If Newsom runs and becomes President, The Toddler could be tapped to be the Ambassador to the Philippines. Perhaps this trip was a test run. If true, I say, YES! Just get him out of San Diego and California altogether.
