Celebrating 45 Years of Ocean Beach Christmas Parade Magic
By Mike James
This Saturday marks my 45th year as an announcer at the Ocean Beach Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting—a tradition started by my brothers and that’s grown into an important part of my life.
It all began in 1980 when my brother Rich and a few friends strolled down Newport Avenue to the very first OB Xmas Tree playing Christmas carols on kazoos. That year, I officially MC’d the OB Tree Lighting, so I’m counting it as the start!
Even during COVID in 2020, the tradition endured with a clever reverse parade. I donned my trusty red sequined jacket, waving to families as they drove by the stationary “floats” in the beach parking lot.
Over the years, I’ve developed my own style as an announcer. With a wireless mic in hand, I immerse myself in the action—interviewing participants, hopping on floats, and going completely off-script (my co-host at the judges’ table deftly navigates the script part).
For the past few decades or so, I’ve been lucky to co-host alongside OB local and TV personality Noah Tafolla, who’s graciously embraced my parade antics. Before Noah, I had the honor of working with longtime morning radio DJ and friend Madison Keith.
The parade is more than just an event for me—it’s a reflection of the community I love and a tradition that I hope will continue for years to come. Who knows? They may have to wheel me out there one day, but I’ll still be waving, announcing, and living in the spirit of OB.
Here’s to another year of lights, laughter, and holiday cheer!

Hopefully Mike, you’ve had that jacket cleaned at least once over the past 4 decades!
Your service to our great community is appreciated
Always liked the James Gang! Happy Holidays
