Less than a half hour after Point Loma High let out for the day on Wednesday, August 21, gunshots rang out on Zola Street — about a block from the school. Two people were killed, a mother wounded and her son was arrested as the suspected shooter.
When police arrived, they found the wounded mother, who is in her 80s, in the front yard of her residence. She was taken to a hospital with “very serious” injuries.
Her 60-year old son was also in the yard and was arrested without incident. No one was identified at this stage.
Police also found a woman thought to be in her 60s inside the home fatally shot. Another victim, a man in his 30s, was found shot to death in a side yard.
The shooting was reported about 3:55 p.m. on Zola and near Poinsettia Drive.
A shotgun was found by officers but they could not immediately confirm it was the weapon used in the attack.
Point Loma High’s principal sent a call to parents letting them know the incident had nothing to do with the school and no staff or students were involved.

Police said the shooting was family-related and the suspect is the son of the surviving victim. It is believed they both live at the residence. The exact details of what happened and why remain under investigation.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the shooting was asked to call the SDPD’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580- 8477.
Today: William Bushey, 60, was arrested on double murder charges in the shooting deaths of a woman in her 60s and a man in his 30s at the home on Zola Street, according to the San Diego Police Department. He is also accused of attempted murder in the shooting of his mother, who is in her 80s and remains hospitalized following the shooting.
Colleen Crowden, a neighbor and friend, said the woman who lived there was June Bushey. June Bushey has a daughter and grandsons who match the ages of the two people who were killed. San Diego police were expected to release the identities of the victims Friday.
Crowden said June Bushey had lived in the Point Loma home her entire life. The gray single-family home was her childhood home and she was a graduate of Point Loma High School, which is just a block away. NBC7 https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/point-loma-shooting-suspect-san-diego/3603946/
William Bushey lived with his mother for the last two-plus decades, according to Crowden.
Friday’s 10News: San Diego officers responded to the house twice in the last week after calls from family members concerned about William Bushey’s behavior. One call was on Friday, Aug. 16, and another was on Monday, Aug. 19.
The captain says the family had also tried to hide kitchen knives from Bushey. He says that on the first call, officers were at the home for well over an hour, and for over 40 minutes during the second call to the home.
In both instances, Bushey did not meet the criteria for an emergency psychiatric hold, so officers left the family with resources. The criteria would be a person being an immediate danger to themselves or others.
