Snoop Dogg Bringing Joy to the World

by Ernie McCray

I’ll forever remember
Snoop Dogg
at the Olympics
in Paris,
images of him
that range
from being quietly playful
and downright hilarious,
at all times gregarious,
embracing the spirit of the games
as though it was the dawning of the
Age of Aquarius,
carrying the Olympic flame
like many a blunt
he’s set aflame;

making comments on TV

in prime-time;

crip walking

from time to time;

freestyling raps

as horses trotted and nodded,

as onlookers became besotted;

dancing in the stands

as Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles

boogeyed looking up at him

in between taking matters of gymnastics in hand;

fencing and lifting weights;

swimming with Michael Phelps,

one of the all-time greats;

rapping at the closing ceremony

with Dr. Dre,

leaving me to say

he brought joy to the world

during his time in Paris

on the Olympic stage,

so much fun to watch every day,

to which,

I think

Snoop would say

“Fo shizzle my nizzle”

in his laidback, carefree way.

And, as I look back on it,

I find myself wondering

if we earthlings

are beginning

to change our ways,

becoming more accepting

and tolerant of each other

in infinitesimal ways

as we spin around

on this small life-giving planet of ours

in the vastness of

the Milky Way.

It sure seems that way.

It sure seems that way.

I was raised in a loving and alive home, in a black neighborhood filled with colorful characters in Tucson, Arizona. Such an environment gave me a hint that life has to be grabbed by the tail as tight as a pimple on a mosquito's butt. With no BS and a whole lot of love. So, from those days to now I get up every morning set on making the world a better place. On my good foot*, and I hope my writing reflects that. *an old black expression

  1. I simply cannot believe how mainstream this guy has become. His history is horrendous and his past rap lyrics probably could not even be printed in The Rag. Why this guy has been so accepted with is past is beyond comprehension. Surely, Ernie, there were other people to admire way more than this guy.

        1. Usually I am on board Geoff, but you can’t compare Pablo Escobar to Snoop. Snoop is a rapper. He’s not an international drug kingpin. Was Escobar really all that bad? The Sacklers certainly didn’t build any churches, schools or hospitals. IMO, it’s demand and supply and time and place… If it wasn’t Pablo, it would have been someone else.

  2. Of course we are getting better! Watching the DNC roll call last night screamed that out loud and clear! Sending hugs to you and the family! I’ll try to pass through on my next San Diego visit. Come visit us in Napa!

  3. Ernie,
    You nailed it! Snoop is one of the rappers that has made himself mainstream, with fun and lots of love. He has also made a greater impact donating to so many causes that also include our youth.
