Rebecca Taylor, the chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, died as a result of a motorcycle accident in Utah on Tuesday, July 16. “Becca” as she was known by many, was on a cross-country trip on a motorcycle and hit from behind by another vehicle, 10 News reported.
Taylor, 40, grew up in OB and at one point, served on the OB Town Council. (Go here for a Rag post about Becca from February 2023.) That’s where I first met her.
Becca’s friends and associates didn’t learn of the tragedy until Wednesday. Becca also served as an aviation electrician in the US Navy, as an advocate for victims of sexual assault and as a fighter for LGBTQ rights.
Known by politico Democrats up and down the state as she has been chair of the local San Diego Democratic party since 2022, accolades and statements have poured in since news of her untimely demise. Gov. Gavin Newson, Rep. Sara Jacobs and Rep. Scott Peters, Mayor Todd Gloria have all issued statements mourning her death.
Jacobs wrote:
“Becca devoted her life to serving others — from the Navy to advocating for sexual assault survivors to getting more people involved in our democracy,” Jacobs said. “She was kind, funny, sharp, and endlessly selfless. I’ll miss her.”
Peters wrote:
“Team Peters lost one of its brightest alumni stars last night, and we are heartbroken. We met Becca Taylor when she worked as an organizer in our 2014 re-election campaign. It was a tough and tense one, but above the dull roar of a packed campaign office, we could hear Becca’s distinct and upbeat voice cheering others on, a one-person pep squad.”

I did not know Ms. Taylor. Regardless, it is so sad to lose a young person, and a committed, intelligent, energetic young person. We need people like that today more than ever. My condolences to her family.
I knew Becca very well. She was a saint! We sat on the town council together and became very close. We remained close for the last 10+ years. If anyone knows her service info I’d like to honor her. Please reach out if this is know. My contact info was shared.

A tremendous loss. Becca was a San Diego treasure. She lit up a room. She will be missed terribly.
