Environmental Activists Lobby San Diego Council to ‘ReWild’ Mission Bay — Tuesday, May 14

ReWild Holds Rally for Vital Environmental Protections in the Mission Bay Park Master Plan Amendment

A coalition of 89+ member organizations, known collectively as the ReWild Coalition, are hosting a rally at San Diego City Hall on Tuesday at 1PM, before delivering comments at the City Council meeting to adopt critical amendments to the Mission Bay Park Master Plan.

It’s part of their effort to lobby the City Council to “rewild” northeast Mission Bay.

According to the Coalition, the amendments aim to secure the ecological future of the park and ensure it remains a beacon of community access, climate resilience, and natural beauty. Andrew Meyer, Director of Conservation at San Diego Audubon Society says “After almost 30 years of inaction on the Master Plan, City councilmembers must show leadership, vision and decisive action to restore the lungs of the Bay, reconnecting us and protecting our communities from the climate crisis. It’s time to ReWild Mission Bay.”

The ReWild Coalition has been instrumental in pushing for an iconic public park that provides equitable access to our shared shoreline while making a resilient and climate change-combatting investment in our city. As the City Council reviews the proposed De Anza Natural Plan, the coalition emphasizes the urgency of implementing robust
environmental protections and sustainable management practices to get Wildest acreage and access guaranteed in the plan.

Highlights of the Coalition Requests:

  •  Improvements to the proposed amendments aimed at guaranteeing wetland implementation and infrastructure that is ready for climate change.
  • Edits that prioritize natural habitat restoration for public benefit over competing land uses so that future funding and planning is accomplished as soon as possible
  • Dedicated funding from the Mission Bay Park Improvement Fund for ongoing wetland restoration efforts, as prioritized in the City Charter.

The event will include speakers from San Diego Audubon, San Diego Coastkeeper, Grossmont College Conservation Club, San Diego Surfrider Foundation, Climate Action
Campaign and Living Coast Discovery Center.
