This is certainly a twist during apparently the late hours of the Primary season.
There was a flyer circulating around Pacific Beach last week about a coming development on the 2000 block of Beryl Street in that community. The flyer was appearing to either announce or warn PB residents about an affordable housing project coming to some church property for sale at 2088 Beryl Street. It states “The former church property 2088 Beryl Street at Academy is going to be used for up to forty-nine low-income housing units.”
At the top of the flyer, it announces “SB 10 Coming to the Kate Sessions Neighborhood!!!” (Yes, with 3 exclamation marks.) It tells people “If you do not believe this is an appropriate location or use for low-income housing, or have questions or other concerns, talk with others of our neighborhood and parents and decide on a course of action,” obviously attempting to rile up local residents about the horrors of a coming affordable house project with a whooping 49 units. The flyer also cites other “reasons” why this is the wrong type of development for this neighborhood.
Trouble is – the flyer purports to be from the OB Rag and uses our PO Box address BUT – the Rag had NOTHING to do with it!
Not only that – there is no development of the kind coming to that block of PB. So, the whole flyer is fake, a hoax. Apparently the church property is for sale though.
We’re are currently attempting to gain a copy of the flyer or trying to find out if there is any other organizational affiliation or address on the fake flyer.
But why would anyone send this flyer out at the end of the Primary season? Mayor Gloria is targeted somewhat, the Rag is blamed for the flyer and SB10 is used as a boogeyman scare tactic.
Bottom line: someone created a hoax, is impersonating the Rag and sending out flyers about a fake development.
Here’s the flyer with the text on one side and address on the other. (The Rag address is correct.) We’ve already received an email from someone who wants more details of the development project.

It’s interesting to see the use of the word “our” like that. The implication would be that it came from someone in that neighborhood. Or, it was just done deliberately to make it seem that way. And, why the OB Rag reference for something in PB? How many people on that street even know The Rag at all?
Absolutely, who would know of the Rag besides the three or four of us?
A large number of people read the OB Rag that don’t live in OB. Surprised? The alternative news supplies are in short supply these days. Where else can you read it? Not in San Diego.
We have a daily readership from 1,000 to 1,500.
Good grief, it was humor from Geoff’s last sentence.
Oh, I know that. I have a pretty good idea of The Rag’s reach, which is very good, but it is not a stretch to say that people on a particular block in PB may not be familiar with it either.
I wonder if they are using your address so that comments and questions come your way? Maybe trying to get the “story” more attention???
Well, maybe. But they didn’t provide the web address. which is odd.
Good point. But they must have assumed we’d find out it was all a hoax. Who gains by this mailer / flyer?
Could not find a listing with the asking price on line, can you? What’s the zoning of the property?
Found this.
Church’s website no longer active – so must be closed? http://www.uccpacificbeach.com
Well….brings more readers to the RAG, wonder why as you question.
Thanks for the help but please don’t leave long links without text — see what it does?
City notice dated 1/2/24 “Conditional Use Permit (CUP) to remove (1) monocypress tree, (1) cannister, (9)antennas (3), (6) radio remote units (RRU), (11) tower mounted amplifiers and (12) batteries and install (12)
antennas, (9) RRU’s, and (1) battery cabinet containing (24) batteries on a new monoeucalyptus tree. The property is located at 2088 Beryl Street in the residential RM1-1 zone of the Pacific Beach Community Planning area, and Council District 2. The WCF is unmanned and is not for human habitation”
Alright, good going. I looked up the past permits and it was the longest list of cell phone projects on the church building I’ve ever seen for a single address over several years. What is the “WCF?”
WCF – Wireless Communication Facility
Ah, thanks.
Why is it always “affordable housing” or “low income housing”.
Give a number.
Is it people on the streets getting Section 8?
People priced out by Airbnb who earn income but not enough to afford the long term rentals here?
Why the mysterious lack of price?
How much?
“Joe LaCalva”? Amateur hour…
LOL missed that. Hey Mat, any other thoughts on this? Like, who benefits?
Honest evaluation would implicate this mud is entering the water from Todd’s Fraud Squad to be used vilify the residents of Pacific Beach and the OB Rag to point fingers and fraudulently decry —–> “NIMBY’s” here is the proof!
