Ocean Beach Town Council Still Struggling Through Scandal – There’s Been Yet Another Resignation From the Board

The OB Town Council is still struggling through the scandal which has mired the long-time community organization in the muck left after the former president, Cory Bruins, was forced to resign. Yet, another resignation from the Board of Directors demonstrates this all too well.

Board member Mandy Havlik announced her resignation over the past weekend, the Rag has learned. This leaves the Board with only 7 members – usually it has 15.

Their website is still down – although their facebook page is still up and running.

They are holding a public meeting tonight, Wednesday, March 27, but it doesn’t appear they are using the moniker of the OB Town Council.

As you may recall, the OBTC has hired an independent auditor who was/ is supposed to figure out the financial status of the group. At their last meeting, the community was informed the audit may not be completed until April or May.

During the last two public meetings the Board has held, community members stressed their need to be transparent and how the group needs to gain the community’s trust, which was severely damaged during Bruins’ reign. Yet, Havlik’s resignation does not bode well for the town council’s ability to manage the crisis.

The leadership sent out a meeting notification for tonight’s gathering, but the tone of the announcement does not comport with the status of the crisis that has yet to be resolved. It sounded like nothing was wrong and the Board is just going about their regular course of business — holding a “Neighborhood Roundtable discussion.” Nothing could be further from the truth, unfortunately.

The Rag urges the OBTC leadership to be upfront with the community, to level with people about what’s really going on, plus we urge community members to attend tonight’s meeting and observe and question board members as to all of this.

What’s the status of the audit? What’s happening with this so-called “Community Foundation”? What’s the status of the finances and paperwork needed to bring the group back up to a “legal” standing? Why are members still resigning?

  1. I assume members are resigning because this is supposed to be a fun volunteer service-based organization that probably doesn’t feel like it anymore thanks to horrendous potentially criminal leadership from Corey Bruins.

    1. Or maybe they’re just fed up with the lack of resolution of a scandal that has been going on for months. But yeah, it’s not fun anymore.

  2. I attended tonight’s round table and the panel provided tons of great information. Sadly, I was one of the handful of people that actually came to the meeting. Extremely disheartening, to say the least.

After the meeting, I briefly spoke with one of the OBTC Directors and asked when we could expect the Council to have their next meeting.
