Mayoral Candidate Larry Turner Calls for City to Rebid Midway District Redevelopment Project

San Diego mayoral candidate Larry Turner on Monday, March 25, called for the city to rebid the Midway District redevelopment project, accusing Mayor Todd Gloria of having ties to a member of the development team.

The Midway Rising project would redevelop a dilapidated area of warehouses and two strip clubs, building 4,250 new homes, replacing the aging Sports Arena and creating an urban park and adjacent entertainment district.

But in a letter to the mayor, Turner requested a rebid because of “modifications to the initial plan, significant cost increases being passed on to taxpayers, and the appointment of a major campaign donor as the project developer.” He was referring to the principals of Encinitas-based Zephyr LLC, one of four companies involved in the project.

Turner, a police officer who is campaigning for his first public office, also criticized the “removal of middle-income affordable units and a significant reduction in hotel capacity.”

Citing concerns over past handling of the 101 Ash Street project, Turner wrote,” I urge you to order a rebidding process that ensures full disclosure and transparency.”

Turner, who received 23.1% of the vote in the March 5 primary, faces Gloria, who polled 50.0%, in the November general election. Times of San Diego

  1. The Times, LaPrensa and here have this story out. I suggested it for a story to CBS8. Turn up the heat!

  2. Larry Turner has common sense, and the mayor has debts to donors to pay. Today’s UT says the mayor wants to move his puppets from downtown to Mission Valley and it will only add to the 167 million dollars he’s already pushed the City into AND his council puppets are in lock step and nodding their heads yes to it all. It will be still another failure of this regime to approve the bait and switch tactic, by the developer, of the so called Midway Rising. This should be a resounding NO WAY coming from the mayor and council reps offices.

    1. “Larry Turner has common sense”.
Well, that’s a refreshing change, and a good start for a mayoral candidate.
How do we support this guy?

  3. And as if he was listening … to all my anti-Gloria comments, I just received an email from Gloria himself:
“Dear Friends, The City of San Diego is one of the safest big cities in America – and, as Mayor, it is my highest priority to keep it that way.” blah blah blah
“I am proud to announce that our search is complete and I am appointing Assistant Police Chief Scott Wahl to be our next Chief of Police. ” blah blah blah —
BUT BIG QUESTION!! Why was the email announcement paid for by Todd’s re-election committee????

  4. I just wrote to the city attorney, and the city council asking them to rebid the Midway rising contract.. hoping that you all will do it too!!

  5. In November, the voters in San Diego will have a clear choice between the continued corruption of the mayor’s office or a fresh start down the road to responsible government.

Larry Turner is the first candidate in a half century with a good chance of winning the mayors office who is not owned by the developers in this town.

There is not a dimes bit of difference from the corruption during the Faulconer eight years and the Gloria continuing sleaze that is the hallmark of city government today.

I predict that Gloria will lose badly based on the wisdom of Abraham Lincoln “…you can’t fool all of the people all of time.”
