An Ocean Beach woman who found a fox – yes, a real fox – in her bathroom this past week took its photo. And the photo is proof that the fox has returned to the Peninsula, to Point Loma and Ocean Beach. The fox, as a mammal group.
According to the San Diego Humane Society, the fox was playing with the woman’s dog on Monday, October 14, but then it ran into her house. In the hope that it would it would run back outside, the woman left her door open over night.
But when she came into her bathroom the next morning – there it was. So, she called the Humane Society.
The Humane Society stated:
Our Humane Officer safely captured the fox, which was healthy, and released the animal back outside.

Our Humane Officer was called out to Ocean Beach yesterday because a resident there reported a critter had gotten into her house. The resident’s dog was playing with an unknown animal, who ended up running into the house. The resident left the door open, hoping the critter would run back outside in the night. But the next day, she opened the door to find a fox laying on the counter! Our Humane Officer safely captured the fox, which was healthy, and released the animal back outside. Our Humane Officers have only had about three calls about foxes in their history, so this was a very unique case!
The agency said this “was a very unique case!” as their officers have only had about 3 calls about foxes in their history.
Despite the uniqueness of seeing a fox in one’s house, this reporter has had at least one encounter with a fox in Point Loma. I sighted it in a Point Loma front yard while driving along Santa Barbara Avenue. I brought up the issue of foxes with a Ranger at the Point Loma Light House soon after and he told me that, yes, indeed, they’ve seen more foxes out in the wilds of the national park – and that they’ve returned to the Peninsula. And this was at least a decade ago.
Are foxes a species? According to Wikipedia:
Foxes are small-to-medium-sized, omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. Foxes have a flattened skull, upright triangular ears, a pointed, slightly upturned snout, and a long bushy tail (or brush). Twelve species belong to the monophyletic “true foxes” group of genus Vulpes.

Sorry fox, it’s a tough audience out there. Actually, I ran into a beautiful red fox in Tecolote Canyon in a creek bed back in the early 1990s.

The mainstream media is giving the OB woman a “hard time” for leaving the fox in her house over night. I can completely understand that tactic as I had a similar situation with a possum who crept into my OB cottage and got under my bed. So I just left the bedroom door and the backdoor open – and poof she was gone.
You can buy a domesticated fox from Russia. It is a famous experiment that was started in the Soviet era. Google it for details. As the foxes were selected each generation to be tame, they started to look more like dogs, with floppier ears for example.
I was walking my dog maybe 20 years ago at Sunset Cliffs near the parking lot. All of a sudden I glimpsed a fox in the bushes watching us. It seemed very curious. I was fascinated with this beautiful but elusive creature and my own dog was none the wiser. So happy that they are now on the Point.
yep…had a fox twice this week in the back yard. Got him or her…(I mean do foxes have preferred pronouns?)… both times on camera. Once in the garden and once sleeping on the tile counter for the outdoor BBQ
