Omit the outdoor patio. You’ve already got enough homeless begging outside the front door. This will just attract more and make it less desirable for those actually wanting to use the library.
Eliminate the 4 computers on the east wall.
Having kids run the homeless gauntlet past the computers to the kids area is unacceptable.
Yes, get rid of the patio. If people want to sit outside they can visit one of the local establishments, parks, etc. How about an area for the display and storage of OB Historical books, articles, pictures etc. so they have a forever home
Oh, thank you so much for the feedback! and thank you Frank and the OB Rag for getting the word out!! We are so lucky here in OB. I absolutely love this place. The good, the unusual and the messy! It is such a great community!
Dear reader: please only make constructive comments and indicate whether you live in OB and have ever visited this historic library.
Is this the current plan? I think there was a much nicer architectural plan several years ago. This “plan” looks like an amateur’s sketch. Does this layout increase or decrease the children’s area? In my opinion, the children’s area should be increased and the homeless areas should be decreased. This sketch does not show parking areas or property lines or how a community room could be separated from the library users.
p.s. I have lived nearby and used the library for 40+ years.
Architects Hanna Gabriel Wells (on Bacon Street at Santa Monica) apparently did initial designs. Maybe they have initial designs on display at their office?

No opinion on patio or computer area. I just went for the DVDs. I still have a $40 library fine at this location, I will pay it! I’m sorry. Lol.
My current local library has been hosting really cool activities in their conference rooms. D&D. Sewing. Try a new musical instrument day. Fic and non-fiction book clubs. Library is legit fun.

I suggest looking at some of the other library projects that have recently been completed, are underway, or are planned for ideas on improving our library. I’ll get my feedback to the Friends soon.

Friends of the OB Library need a larger space (for storage & sales) Preferably near the front entrance (see Mission Valley Lib).
Make space/room for OB Historical Society including for displays & exhibits.
Have shelf front & center for “New, Best Sellers, Staff Recommends” books/DVDs, perhaps instead of guard desk.
Not enough detail with this sketch. Need to see Hanna Gabriel Wells original design.
Where is plan for 2nd floor of new bldg.?
Need a detailed list of amenities/improvements with new plan/design. If going from 4,600 sq. feet to 15,000 square feet how many more volumes/books/newspapers, how many more computers for public use, how many more shelves, sq. feet for children/teens, for story telling, study/tutoring areas, and ADA improvements.
