In a sign of the changing of the guard along Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, one of OB’s oldest “greasy-spoons” is up for lease.

The Lopez family which has owned and run the Village Kitchen for 30 to 40 years is ready to retire. Mr. Lopez and his daughter Liz have been managing it – with Mr. Lopez in the kitchen – for much of that time.

The small eatery on OB’s main commercial street – around 1,700 square feet – definitely has its fans and many in OB call it their “favorite”. It’s still open with its regular hours.

The Lopez’s own the entire building, which also includes the space where the James Gangs has relocated.

Will miss them. The Village Kitchen was the first place we ate at when we arrived in San Diego. Lopez used authentic Mexican recipes that some tried to copy but were not successful. I watched his daughters – Liz and Eliana become young adults, and then watched their children grow up too. His wife, when she wasn’t the cashier on the weekend, was a beautician in Pacific Beach, and, in fact, was my beautician for many years. Time has a way of moving on. I hope that the retirement the family is searching for is fruitful; enjoyable, and they maintain good health. Best of luck to all of the family.

If they own the building, why is Toss Panos Revocable Trust, Anastasios Panos Trustee the owner of the property in public records?
