What is CiclOBias?
The coastal neighborhood of Ocean Beach will host this year’s open streets celebration, CiclOBias, an annual event held in various neighborhoods around the city. San Diego Bike Coalition invites families to bike, skate, scooter, walk — anything outside a car — while experiencing OB’s the most popular streets while not in a car. Participants can cruise along the three-mile route, stopping to check out any of the dozens of local restaurants and shops that make up the vibrant community of Ocean Beach.
For one day, CiclOBias offers a rare opportunity for people to experience the character of Ocean Beach and its array of local businesses. The free event allows participants to enjoy time outdoors while catching a glimpse of what streets would be like without car traffic.
When is CiclOBias?
CiclOBias will take place on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 from 10:00AM until 3:00PM. Since the event takes place so close to Halloween weekend, there will surely be costumes along the route. Everyone is encouraged to preview their Halloween best!
Where is CiclOBias?
The bookends of the event are:
Voltiare St. at Bacon St. and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Santa Monica Ave. at Abbott St.and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Newport Ave. at Abbott St and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Bacon St. at Niagara St.
The route (approximately 3 miles) will be continuous through Ocean Beach and includes hundreds of businesses for you to discover and explore. Participants can, walk, ride, stroll, skate and shop in a counterclockwise direction that is free-flowing and at a low rate of speed. Entry to the route is also free-flowing meaning access to the route is available at any intersection during the event hours of 10am-3pm.
Road Closures
In addition to the road closures for the route itself, side streets along the route will also be affected. Expect soft closures of roads one block off the route on either side.

Periodic Crossings
In order to accommodate residents, businesses, places of worship and to minimize any disruption, there are (3) periodic crossings along the route. These crossings will allow traffic to cross at designated spots along the CiclOBias route.

Saratoga Ave at Bacon St.
Newport Ave and Cable St.
Santa Monica Ave and Cable St.
Hub Locations CiclOBias
Hubs are spots along the route for participants to stop and take a look around. Hubs will have information stations, CiclOBias merchandise available for purchase, bike repair, portable toilets and other offerings. Check out the News and Event page for a list of “Day Of” happenings.

Gee thanks, CicloBias but most of us enjoy the character of OB all the time without all this disruption. it looks like for one day all of OB will be a mess. Who decides that these events can tie up all of OB like this? Last weekend it was Octoberfest, a World Surfing Association contest, and volleyball. Now this.

Rest assured, Bird will be dropping off hundreds of extra scooters for the bicycling event that weekend.
Great! More Air BnB folks, slack-jawed gawkers, and turds to flood the area and ruin another weekend. So, I guess the idea is to drive your car from East county North County, South Bay, LA, PHX, all the way to the beach to ride your bike or skateboard. Neat.
I’m somewhat bemused by the intensely negative reactions by an otherwise ‘progressive’ blog to an event promoting bicycles in neighborhoods. This event has been carried out successfully in numerous San Diego neighborhoods over the years. It’s not their first rodeo. When they came to the OB council meeting last month, they stressed that they would make every effort not to tow cars, and to allow for safe crossing for residents needing to drive out of the event area. It’s also a whole 5 hours of our lives. For me it certainly highlights the unhealthy relationship we all have with driving cars. I think we can survive this OB. Be strong.
For me – it’s the messaging and attitude…this group doesn’t even know OB and how much bike/skate/walk goes on..Bacon st is a bike lane!

Can’t people just ride bikes in their own neighborhood and support their own local businesses?
Whoever is organizing the event should have to pay for the tow of any car of an OB resident who should be able to park where they live!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a fun event this should be getting out with out a car maybe parking at Rob field and enjoying the streets of OB at slow speed. Visiting neighbors and business in a more laid back OB fashion. Inner city fun How lucky to live in such a fun place and meeting others who may come to spend their money with local businesses and enjoy the OB vibe

Wait, so if you’re parked on any of these streets right next your own house you’ll get towed?
I like that idea of strolling and meeting “neighbors”. Can we close off OB to cars on the weekend and eliminate the porta potties on our streets?
Super frustrating! The closing of streets and limited parking related to this event directly impacts all the churches along Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Why was this event planned for a Sunday? Also, the planners did a very poor job of notifying the community. How will the elderly and disabled access this area? In an attempt to make OB “open and welcoming” the organizers have in essence said, OB is only open and welcoming to young, healthy people…if you can’t ride, skate, or bike, you don’t belong here. This is not the OB I know and love.

I rode the entire route. What a great event that had so many happy people everywhere, and also had no commercial element and no alcohol promotion. It was positively utopian.
I hope this becomes a regular event!
