Organizers had promised a protest along with “refreshments, guest speakers, media and entertainment” – none of which appeared to materialize on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Famosa site of proposed housing.

They did, however, set up a “drive-by lane” where signatures could be taken without people getting out of their vehicles for a petition organizers have been circulating around Point Loma of late.

On Saturday, they had such a station across from CLeator Park – with some folks holding signs that read “Save Famosa” and “Sign the Petition”. Others had clipboards with the petitions. People would stop by periodically and sign.

There was another set up just down the road at the entrance to Park Point Loma – the center of the current organizing. Other signature gatherers were in Cleator Park – where there was a lot of athletic stuff going on, baseball or soccer. After one and a half hours, they had 373 signatures, they told our roving reporter. Also reportedly, the petition was circulated at the Point Loma High Homecoming Game.

There was a security guy there, a young kid in a tan security uniform in a Prius. He was asked if the Housing Commission had sent him and he said he didn’t know. He was there, he told our reporter, because his company sent him.  He said he was supposed to keep people from trespassing on the site.  He said they regularly patrol the area now.
