Lincoln Club Mailer Against Campbell and in Support of Zapf Cites Wrong Lawsuit

A campaign mailer is sparking accusations and criticism from both sides in the San Diego City Council battle between Democrat Dr. Jennifer Campbell and incumbent Republican Lorie Zapf. … The mailer, which was sent out by the conservative Lincoln Club of San Diego County, asserts that Campbell was “sued after committing disability fraud” and eventually signed “a secret settlement” and returned to work. Campbell’s campaign says the mailer is inaccurate and misleading, partly because it shows pictures of a lawsuit filed against a different Jennifer Campbell — who lives in Tennessee. San Diego U-T

Man Stabbed Friend in the Midway Then Continues to Watch UFC Fight

A man was arrested after police say he stabbed his friend, then returned to watching a UFC fight. The stabbing happened on the 3000 block of Midway Drive around 9:15 p.m. Saturday. Police say the two friends took a Lyft from downtown to the Midway District when they got into a fight. After leaving the car, the pair’s argument became even more heated before the suspect, Paul McNett, 43, wrapped his arm around the victim’s neck and stabbed him in the front of his neck. After the stabbing, McNett stayed at the restaurant to watch the UFC fight. The 55-year-old victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. McNett was arrested and booked into jail. 10News

Scheduled performers include Palmer; fellow honoree Mark Goffney, the armless guitarist who has performed with Mana; Galewood, who until 2016 performed under the name Bushwalla; Gato Papacitos; and the Pizaroo Brothers. Navy Soliciting Bids for Redevelopment of 70 acres at Point Loma

The Navy will host an “INDUSTRY DAY” aboard Naval Base Point Loma Old Town Complex (NBPL OTC) to allow industry leaders to tour the location and review opportunities to redevelop the 70.5-acre NBPL OTC in exchange for new government facilities. In September 2018, the U.S. Navy issued a “Request for Interest” (RFI) on Federal Business Opportunities to solicit valuable industry input to redevelop NBPL OTC. Fox27

OB Arsonist to Stand Trial

A transient was ordered to stand trial on charges of setting 10 fires in Ocean Beach that damaged six cars including a classic MGB convertible, after he admitted to all of them, back on July 12 and 13. Michael Barringer, 26, was ordered to stand trial for Nov 21. The car most severely damaged was a 1979 MGB classic convertible that was owned by Scott Stavish, who posted on a GoFundMe.com page. The car’s interior was destroyed. Barringer reportedly placed trash and papers inside the car and set it on fire. Most of the fires were set inside trash or recyclable bins that were placed either on or beside vehicles in Ocean Beach. There was only one fire that had a motive, said police, and that was a bag of dog feces that was placed on someone’s porch and set on fire. Police said Barringer told them the resident in that house had refused to give him money. So Barringer found the bag and burned “a bag of poop” on the person’s porch, supposedly. No motive could be determined in any of the other fires, according to witnesses. SD Community News Group

Tuition on the Rise at PL Nazarene

The word on Point Loma Nazarene University’s campus is that tuition is on the rise, spiking a possible 2–3% each year. The current cost for a full-time PLNU student is $35,100 for the entire year, broken down to $17,550 for each semester. Lomabeat.com

Former OB Marijuana Testing Lab Staff Couldn’t Meet State Documents Deadline – License Revoked Temporarily

State officials have revoked the license of PharmLabs, one of three marijuana testing labs in San Diego County that had been licensed under California’s new recreational cannabis laws. Having local labs with state licenses will become crucial later this year when up to 40 indoor pot farms and marijuana edible factories begin to open in the city of San Diego. … The Bureau of Cannabis Control said in a news release that PharmLabs is still eligible for an annual license despite having its temporary license revoked last week. …Greg Magdoff, owner of PharmLabs, …he remains optimistic that he will obtain one of the first annual licenses in the state. Magdoff, who launched his business seven years ago, said the license was revoked primarily because his staff couldn’t meet state deadlines to fill out hundreds of documents required for each test they conduct. But Magdoff said his staff is working toward meeting the state’s stringent requirements, which they support because the goal of the requirements is public safety. “The entire cannabis industry in California is facing hurdles as we journey into a regulated market,” he said. “We’re charging forward in hopes to be one of the first labs to have an annual license.” PharmLabs moved its San Diego location from Ocean Beach, where it violated the zoning rules, to an industrial section of the Midway District near the sports arena in July 2017.  SD U-T

SeaWorld Stabilizes Turtle Caught With Hook in Throat Off OB Pier

San Diego Lifeguards rescued a Green Sea Turtle with a hook caught in its throat Thursday evening Sept. 27 at the Ocean Beach Pier. Lifeguards loaded the 70-pound turtle into a boat and transported it to SeaWorld San Diego, where staff immediately began doing tests. Hours later a SeaWorld spokesperson said the turtle was in stable condition. 7SanDiego

Power Outage Hits the Beaches

An early morning power outage left several thousand homes and businesses without electrical service in Pacific Beach and the Mission Bay early Friday, Oct. 5.The blackout, caused by an equipment malfunction shortly before 3:30 a.m., initially left about 2,400 addresses in the dark, according to San Diego Gas & Electric. As of 9:30 a.m., roughly 1,000 customers remained without power, SDG&E spokesman Joe Britton said. By early afternoon, repair crews had electrical service restored to all the affected areas, according to the utility company. KUSI
