If we have a Target in OB, it would create jobs for the OB Residents. Wouldn’t that be a good thing? I’m not a fan of big corporations in OB myself, but I find Target much cheaper than Rite-Aid, CVS, Ralphs, Vons, etc.

I agree Frank. If they don’t provide the health benefits, it seems pointless & truly unfair. But still, a part-time job is better than nothing.

Obviously, many jobs are not FT and many don’t have benefits. That’s part of the problem with the economy, right? Why should a huge, gigantic retailer offer such drivel? Poor Target, their profits were off in the last quarter of 2016, and that’s why opening Target Expresses in trendy neighborhoods is part of their scheme to compete with Walmart and Amazon.
What % of jobs for the Rag are full time with benefits?
Are you seriously comparing the mostly-volunteer, shoe-string operation of the OB Rag with the multi-billion dollar second top retailer in the country? My goodness, I want to smoke what you are.
It’s already done. The fight is lost before we ever had a chance to fight it. BUT is it that big of a deal? After all, OB is not what it used to be. It is the new PB. Sadly.

Danny, You do realize voters read these pages? Please for your own sake, stop embarrassing yourself.
Most of these people do not even live in OB, right Frank. Target is better than CVS and Rite Aid.
JD, who are “these people”?
With rent sky-high, maybe $1,000- $1,200 monthly for a studio in OB… How could locals get by on a part-time, minimum wage job with no benefits? These jobs might be OK for kids in High School or maybe a college student… but come on… let’s be realistic about this because I guarantee you that 99% percent of the people that comment and read this site wouldn’t fill out an application and become a check-out clerk at Target.
Think about this: Target Express says they’ll hire 40 to 60 part-timers. Why not hire instead 20 to 30 full-timers? Bottom line: the gigantic multi-national corporation, 2nd largest retailer in the nation, wants to save a few cents by not having to pay the taxes, the workers’ comp, and medical benefits for those few workers. Those cents eat into the shareholders’ profits – and those are the real beneficiaries of Target. We’ll not talking losses to operational costs – Target is not about to shut down. We’re talking losses to their profits. But don’t despair, the new strategy is to open Target Expresses in trendy and cool neighborhoods like OB, compete with local businesses as Target strives to overcome Walmart and Amazon.
Your complaints about Target and Insurance makes no sense. How many of the bars, cafes, tattoo, ice cream, t-shirt, bead, antique shops offer insurance benefits?
It’s ok to not want Target, but if your compass of social responsibility is insurance, then it has to apply to all business operators in OB.
If you want business’ that offer FT-jobs, benefits, 401k, profit sharing then OB will certainly change beyond anything you can think of right now.
Be careful what you wish for.
The issue is not insurance per se, it’s about decent paying jobs with at least a minimum of benefits. You cannot compare the gigantacus Target, multi-billion dollar enterprise with the mom and pop, family or small group owners and single-owners of the small businesses in OB.
