Local Pet Store Throws Holiday Benefit for Cat Rescue Shelter

By Matthew Wood

We all know the good little boys and girls of Ocean Beach will get a visit from Santa Claus in a few weeks.

But did you know that all the good little pets will also get their chance to visit the big guy this weekend?

They do – and it’s all part of Bone Appetit’s annual fundraiser for the store’s cat rescue shelter.

For a $5 donation, owners can bring their pets in this Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. for a picture with “Santa Paws” at the store’s Sunset Cliffs/Narragansett location. The store will also offer specials on pet supplies and 15 percent off all holiday items.

For Bone Appetit owner Kelly Patri, it’s a chance to connect with pet owners while raising money for her cat adoption service, which has been around in OB for 12 years. In fact, the shelter moved off site recently to accommodate more cats.

“It’s such a great experience,” she said. “We get a chance to celebrate for a good cause and to raise awareness for our cats. They’re looking for some great homes.”

It’s a special event for me as well, as I will play the role of Santa for the second straight year. I’ve been growing my beard and plumping up in order to give the pets the most authentic experience possible.

Pets owners are invited to dress up their dogs (although you can bring cats for pics if they’re behaved enough) and bring them for photos. I promise not to bite if they do the same.

For Kelly, it’s one of her favorite days of the year.

“It’s so cool to get the pets in here, and their owners,” she said. “We just try to have fun with it and make it a good time for our furry friends.”

What: 10th Annual Santa Paws Cat Rescue Fundraiser
When: Noon-5 p.m. Saturday
Where: Bone Appetit — 1785 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
Cost: $5 donation goes to cat rescue shelter

should point out that the cat rescue shelter is kelly Petri’s own, located right in her store.
