A Toyota pickup flipped over near Rosecrans Street off of I-5; the driver fled but he left a 5 year old boy dangling still strapped to his car seat.

7NBC has the story. A black Tundra flipped over while going southbound on I-5, near Rosecrans and Old Town, landing on its side over an embankment on Jefferson Street. The boy was partially ejected, reportedly, and witnesses saw him dangling out of the window.

One witness, Veronica Simmons, stated:

“I started screaming ‘There’s a baby in the car, there’s a baby in the car.’ “

Initially, the driver fled, but then returned and unbuckled him from the truck.  A CHP officer said that the boy fell on his back on a concrete curb.

Simmons the witness said:

“The baby just, it just fell, it just ‘Boom!’ It was the most awful sound you want to hear.”

At that point, the driver again fled, with witnesses saying they saw him running south on Jefferson Street.

The boy was taken to a local hospital.

The driver then got scared and took off running, according to CHP.

Another witness Melissa Middleton said:

“It’s very traumatic. The worst part is the parent took off.”

The driver left the scene, but left the truck, which obviously probably has some kind of identification in it.

Update: Investigators have identified the father as 40-year-old Fabiani Arroyo. The CHP says the child fell on his back and hit the concrete curb – about 10 feet.

The boy was taken to Rady Children’s Hospital with injuries from the collision and the fall officials said Monday.

His mother has requested the hospital not release updates on her son’s medical condition. SanDiego7 http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Fabiani-Arroyo-Father-Wanted-Rollover-San-Diego-Highway-Child-Trapped-209978051.html
