Slow news day … here’s an open thread … what’s on your mind?

It’s a slow news day.

Here is something other blogs do: present an “open thread” – an opportunity for readers to express what’s on their minds without having to cling to the subject of the post. For here, there’s no post … just your thoughts.

Go to it!  Say your piece! Have an announcement or question? Be a blogger for a day! C’mon, the water’s fine.

Warm day
Cats practice relaxation in puddles of sunlight
Should I take down the Christmas decorations?

Good question. When should one take them down? One year I lived with a local family in the old capital of Guatemala, and they kept theirs up into February. Of course, they didn’t have much in the way of furniture.

I’ve also known some Jewish friends who had holiday lights up and took them down the day after Christmas. I asked them, “what’s up with that?” and they replied that they thought that’s when everybody took them down. I thought about opening a seasonal holiday business, called “Ask a Goyum” just for issues and questions like this.

Random thoughts… Shane is a pretty funny guy. Happy about the weather. Feeling good about the Torrey Pine on Long Branch being saved for now and about recent progress on the Precise Plan update. Bummed that last week’s tragic shootings by an obviously seriously mentally unbalanced person became such a politically-charged battle. Can’t wait for the weekend to start, and hope you all enjoy it.

Seth, right on, bro! ’bout the tree. Anytime we can save trees in OB (and elsewhere) is a good thing, so thanks to you and the rest of the Planning Committee. I know you guys rarely get thanked for what you do.

Can’t comment ’bout the Update.

Mind? I’ve got a mind? Hmm, I’d better stop wallowing around and use that sucker. Thanks (smile). First, some coffee from Grant’s Deli.

Maybe random, and not meant to be offensive but…

In the warzone area I often see a homeless woman with grey hair walking around. She had long hair, but appears to have had it cut recently. She usually has a baggy coat as well. I have attempted to reach out by saying hello almost every time she passes (which is often) but never get a return response. I wasn’t even sure if she spoke English until I saw her in the local pub a few weeks back. She had forgot her bag, and returned to pick it up. She spoke clear as day to the bartender and sounded as nice as could be. Next time I saw her, I attempted to say hello with no response, just a blank stare.

Does anyone know who I am referring to and is there a possible back story? I have seen her around my couple of blocks for several years, but do not know where she lives or what the situation is. Just wondering how we can help…..

I’ve heard that she lives around the neighbor hood or has family near
doesn’t bother anyone, may or not come from money
just wants to be left alone and doesn’t take kindly to offers of help or assistance
next time you see her, tell her you like her new haircut :)
she sure does get around tho! I see her everywhere in OB

Don’t expect a response. I noticed the haircut and told her, “hey, great haircut!” She responded by shooting me a blank stare and lighting up a cigarette as she walked away.
I assume she prefers to be left alone.

I was watching the news last night and they showed how Sea World wants to add a huge roller coaster !!!
I’ve noticed they’ve been doing some work in their parking lot on Sea World Drive
any way we can stop them from becoming an amusement park ???
I remember how they slid the rolelr coaster that’s their now, I’d hate to see it become a baby disneyland
anyone???

Frank Gormlie January 16, 2011 at 10:41 am

Have not heard anything about a roller coaster. They are prepping their new parking lot. There have been numerous attempts to shut down SeaWorld’s expansion plans – the most notable effort was a losing one but it shot Donna Frye into the public arena and was a stepping stone on her way into politician-stardom.

Did you know about the former toxic waste dump there, right next to SeaWorld to the east?

I hate that new house at the end of Muir ave. It blocked my fabulous ocean view. I can’t help but think the guy who built it is a dick. Maybe I’m jelous? I don’t know I like to think that I would not do something like that. Does anyone know who the Ahole is? Why did we allow permitting?

How does starbucks stay in business down here? Out of towners? Can OBceans afford starbucks? I’m ashamed to say I hope his house burns to the ground; and no one is injured.

OB Joe January 17, 2011 at 4:30 pm

Whoa! James, that’s a conversation stopper!

Starbucks originally was able to stay in business because they were willing to operate the OB store in the red, so as not to have to admit defeat. They couldn’t lose here because the battle was so publicized all over the place. Go to NYC and people there have heard of our attempt to stop them here. So it was a huge corporate face-saving stance.

Stand in front of the place someday – no, not like those guys – and see who goes in. Sure, tourists, out-of-towners, students from Nazarene …

feeling the sway from Joni Mitchells melodies
her lyrics spur my creativity ,,,
“My old man
He’s a singer in the park
He’s a walker in the rain
He’s a dancer in the dark
We don’t need no piece of paper
From the city hall
Keeping us tied and true
My old man
Keeping away my blues

“He’s my sunshine in the morning
He’s my fireworks at the end of the day
He’s the warmest chord I ever heard
Play that warm chord, play and stay baby”

hey, has the game started yet?

I think this is a cute story about life today in our high tech world. Friday evening I was walking from my apartment to Winston’s Ocean Beach Comedy. I was dressed in my Gitmo Dave orange jump suit and orange hat. Walking in the Auto Zone parking lot I saw a woman and a little boy about 4 or 5. The woman caught my eye and I could see she was saying to herself, “who is that crazy old man in that outfit” I glanced down and as we passed I saw this little boy looking not at me, but at the screen of his phone. He never looked away from it. Kids today truly live in a plastic world.

Sounds like the OB RAg is organizing a pub crawl, on the weekend and with full notice. It has also been suggested that we do ‘live blogging’ during the crawl, and that possibly Doug – since he doesn’t drink – could be our designated blogger. Give me some weekends, people!
