Ocean Beach Skatepark Fence Saves Kids

in Ocean Beach

By Jim Grant

This car was speeding down interstate 8 yesterday at 4pm, he tried to make the green light at 8 and Sunset Cliffs he ran the red light, skidded around the corner, slid between a concrete barrier (set up to keep cars from crashing into the skate park) and a trio of 40 foot palm trees. If he had hit either of these two things no doubt the car would have split in two, he was doing at least 70 mph at this time. He continued down the sidewalk and landscaping leaving skid marks and a path of debris behind him. He plowed into the 8′ high fencing surrounding the Ocean Beach skate park which was FULL of kids. The fencing crumpled like an aluminum can….

He was telling SDPD. “I just lost control”… His girlfriend had cigars and a bottle of tequila in her arms she salvaged that from the totaled out Acura 2 door. The witness to the whole thing told SDPW he smelled alcohol on the guy. SDPD checked it out and …well the photos tell the story….

Just curious, does this reckless dude live in OB?

I sure hope he has insurance and the park fence gets fixed quick and more trees installed to keep these kids safe.

Good reporting!

Reckless dude lived in jail last nite. He produced a expired insurance card….after talking to the officer the alert officer cuffed him for being under the influence.

damn socialist government, wasting taxpayer money by building a skatepark & the fence around it. and damn socialist police for interfering with his “right” to drive drunk. Vote No on D so we can end these socialist practices. Call Cark Demaio and Kevin Falconer today.

So true Mr Fresh, and let’s not forget the lefty liberal job-melting communist laws that required the guy’s car to offer seatbelts and the guy to wear one, which may have in this case spared the guy from personal injury and saved taxpayers thousands of dollars in his medical bills but that would have been a small price to pay for not living in a nanny state that feeds on small businesses and hard-working people, and whatever happened to personal responsibility as well as just saying no? PS I heard the president is muslim illegal immigrant gay, so don’t vote Democrat!

I wish they’d do something to make the end of the 8 a little safer.Always accidents there, usually a drunk dipstick, sometimes just not paying attention. How many accidents do you have to have to make a change?

and this EXACTLY WHY the planning committe was NUTS to put the skate park there. sigh.

It is not the fault to the planning committee, it is the fault of the stupid drunk driver.

No question that the driver is at fault.

When plans were in process did anyone consider the potential of bodily injury from automobiles? The location of the skate park is smack dab in front of the highway. Duh! Granted there is a light there but what if brakes fail or someone has a heart attack these situations should have been considered?

Now that the park is there the city must take immediate action not only to repair the damage but add additional security. This is not the first time an accident has occurred at this location.

And alcohol is the “legal” alternative.

Stupidity should be far more painful for it’s practitioner.

I’m glad to see that no children were hurt in this reckless event. It’s also nice to see that no-one is vilifying the police for doing their job.

As for the rest of the comments, well, yes, it’s a difficult place to have a skate park, but you also seem to miss that there is a sidewalk there, before the park, and haven’t commented on that either. Nor do you bring any solutions. My father always told me that, “A problem without a solution is just someone bitching…” and to ignore them.

Instead of being critical without any ideas, how about getting your brain in gear and putting together a solution!?

I would think that this event would show the OB Planning committee that they need stronger fencing, and perhaps another 5ft buffer zone for high speed traffic that could possibly come through the light from the highway. There are several deep pillar solutions that can stop a tank that are available to townships and cities to use, to prevent mounting sidewalks, curbs, and other areas. Look around any federal building, you’ll probably see them disguised as planters, trees, and other poles. In fact they are devices to prevent high speed vehicular assault of buildings and property.

That’s my solution.

Yes I agree with “dcode”, put up several deep pillar cement thingies and stop the cars !! It seems we cannot stop the drunks and stupidity that goes with drinking drivers!! Lets focus on what we can do…
