The long-awaited San Diego City Council showdown over the catastrophic Bonus ADU program is in less than 24 hours. But you can (and should) send in a comment electronically to start the opposition drumbeat.
Todd Gloria still wants to cram as many as 10 units on single-family lots. That is unacceptable. Let’s unleash a tsunami of opposition messages on the Council.
Submit a comment on the City Council’s Agenda Comment Form. After you fill in your personal information, the comment type is “City Council Comment,” the agenda item is “202,” and we “Oppose” the item. Here is a message you can copy and paste into the “Comments” box:
As a citizen and stakeholder in the City of San Diego, I want to send you this clear message as you prepare to discuss Todd Gloria’s disastrous Bonus ADU program at the June 16 Council meeting:
“4 Is Fair Everywhere!”
The Mayor still wants to cram too many units on single lots. That is not Bonus ADU “reform.” That is more Bonus ADU abuse. And it is an insult to all the San Diegans who have filled Council chambers to tell heartbreaking stories of losing their property values and their quality of life to predatory ADU development.
We know, and you know, that the Bonus ADU program isn’t solving the affordable housing crisis. It doesn’t produce the housing families badly need. It doesn’t get homeless people off the streets. It puts dense neighborhoods at higher risk for wildfire devastation. And it enriches land speculators and corporate investors.
You have a moral obligation to serve the public – not the Mayor, not the building industry, not the labor unions. This terrible policy has inflicted enough harm. Do the right thing and impose a cap of 4 units per parcel. 4 Is Fair Everywhere!
You also can send your comment in a regular email to the Councilmembers and their chiefs of staff at the email addresses listed below.
If you plan to attend in person, the meeting begins at 2:00 p.m., and this is the third of three items, so it probably will last past 5:00 p.m.

My explanation for the “housing by numbers” quotas that California cities are subjected to has to due with electoral votes. The big guns of the Democratic Party put out the notice, keep Blue states Blue by supporting the building trade unions. Texas and Florida have a lot of construction but with cheaper non-union labor. Big difference. The Democrat Party has informed Democrat governors to inform Democrat mayors to build baby build, to keep the unions voting Blue. The Housing Element, RHNA quotas, and Builder’s Remedy. What a farce.
Whose idea was it to penalize cities with an in-progress housing plan and not a finished plan, by allowing developers to build anything they want? It’s absolute nonsense but true. Cities lose their zoning rights if they are not in compliance with state mandates within a set timeframe. Who wins? Developers of massive multi-family projects. Insanity or what?
As a result of state overreach and a compliant mayor, on June. 16, 2025 hundreds of locals will go downtown to object in person or to cede their “minute” to another speaker on the topic of density bonus ADUs having gone beyond the intent of the program. Will our voices have a positive impact on the 9 city council members? Will they bow to California’s Housing Commission Development? Bet you a $1 they bow.
Do not forget that these rules heard today apply to a small and specific set of Zones. Developers will be happy to shift to Commercial properties, often in the more desirable locations. Where would you rather build – a Clairemont Canyon, or 22 stories, with 21 of them now having a direct view of the ocean and a block or two from the beach?
Please stop what you are doing by allowing terribly designed ADUs in backyards and in front yards., without any restrictions or any thought of it fits architecturally with the neighborhood. There is one on Renault st in UC that they allowed to be built in the whole front yard which has ruined their neighbors value of their homes because it is so ugly and out of place. It should get an onion award?
