Neighbors, business owners, homeless advocates, and other opponents of the proposed Kettner and Vine “mega-shelter” will voice their concerns about the project during public comment on the San Diego City Council’s “closed session” agenda at Monday’s 10 am City Council meeting.
The Mayor and City Council will hear new information about lease negotiations related to the proposed shelter in a closed session following these public comments.
Opponents will restate their numerous and credible concerns about the lack of transparency in these lease negotiations, the Mayor’s continuing refusal to involve nearby residents, business owners, homeless advocates and other “stakeholders” in the planning process, and the flawed financial projections for this proposed 1,000 bed shelter.

Here are some talking points:
to assist you when you call or write:
— Individuals who have lived the experience of homelessness and those who are lifelong advocates for the homeless have spoken out AGAINST the MEGA shelter at Kettner and Vine. All have opposed this cruel and inhumane treatment of stuffing homeless into a warehouse.
— Kettner and Vine is on one of the busiest streets in San Diego and the ingress to the Airport and downtown.
— Those who are experiencing homelessness have become hardened to life on the streets in order to protect themselves. They also develop a strong lack of trust and some mentally and emotionally challenges as well. Most have said, they would not want to have 65sqft of space in a high-density environment and therefore will not use it.
— The City is cutting City services to meet its budget shortfalls. Paying to rehab Doug Hamm’s warehouse should not even be considered.
