A fifth of the American people just voted in what I’m calling “democratic fascism.”

At last count, Trump had a little over 71 million votes. It will nudge up slightly. And there’s 337.4 million people living in the U.S. right now according to the Census Bureau.

So, doing a little math, roughly 20 to 21% of the people, a little over half of the electorate, voted in democratic fascism.

Democratic fascism is a fascism that is democratically voted in. And then it’s fascism for those who didn’t vote for it — and it would also be fascism for many of those that did vote for it.

Even Hitler never had a 50% vote of the people. In the July 1932 parliamentary elections, the Nazi Party won 37 percent of the vote — which was the highest the party ever achieved. This was more votes than any other party received but it wasn’t half.

Yet, America’s new era of democratic fascism wasn’t voted in by half the people — just half the electorate and only a fifth of the populace. That’s hardly “democratic.”

Eventually, this democratic fascism will fold in upon itself because in the end, it’s an oxymoron. You can’t have both democracy and fascism because fascism is the antithesis of democracy, by definition.

Like all fascism in history and around the world, this American-styled democratic fascism will generate its own opposition, its own resistance. This resistance will come because there’s millions of Americans who won’t allow America to become a type of fascism. There’s millions, and millions and millions.

  3. Frank, you are an eternal optimist. I, as you know, am not.

    Trump has loudly and repeatedly told us exactly what he’s going to do. Why would you think he won’t?

    I have also read many of the excerpts that have been posted from Project 2025’s 900 pages about what they will do, and Dr. Mary Trump the psychologist has repeatedly warned us all to believe her uncle because his entire life has been about revenge on those who oppose him or slighted him in the least.

    Liz Cheney is under a death threat as is Pelosi, Biden, Michael Cohen his ex-lawyer and fixer, etc etc. The list grows long including the all the women he has raped in his long life…and reported it. Oligarchs tend to get rid of bothersome evidence and witnesses. How many people are going to migrate between now and Jan 20th? People who know to fear him…

    He now has the power of Stalin, Frank. And the twisted will to use it that way. Just like his niece says. She’s under a death threat, too, yes?

    But I’m expecting Trump to NOT make it through this term as he’s mentally failing like his father did…and then we’ll have Vance as King.

    My 82 yr old retired biologist/environmental activist/high school/teacher/ and Vietnam vet & his retired wife and I had a long conversation this morning. We’re seeing this from a similar viewpoint, pessimistic, and we were remembering our grandparents, who were adults when the Great Depression started, and what they told us about living through it. And how we are going to live through what Trump dishes out.

    My neighbors have always had a huge garden and many mature fruit trees now, they came from rural families so it was normal for them. But…it is not a year’s worth of food for two people. My garden isn’t either, and we’re all getting a bit rickety about how much physical work gardens require.

    My paternal side were an Iowa small-farm family, and Granny K told me they had enough food on the table…but rarely could afford shoes. But at least they could eat. I was a curious kid, and listened to her stories. She didn’t hold back about how bad it was.

    Since a majority of the US population now reside in urban settings (85%) surrounded by concrete and asphalt and not good growing dirt, once the migrants that grow, pick, slaughter the meat animals, and package it all up are ejected from the country, the stores are going to look quite bare I would assume. How’s that going to work out?

    Public schools? Dead. Social Security and Medicare trust funds? Dead and will be dumped into Wall St. stocks where it’ll vanish. No more SS checks. No more disability income for work injuries, either.

    The ACA? Dead. Private insurance companies and HMOs will LOVE him! As will the oil companies. Drill Drill Drill, baby!

    I expect the funding for the VA to be gone, too, because those suckers and losers don’t deserve anything, either. Get a job…like become a cop so you can shoot down protesters. A soldier who’s practiced killing is a marketable skill to have in an Oligarchy.

    MAGA cops are already brutal but they’ll get worse with the TOTAL immunity he promised them…if they do what he says.

    He promised to turn the military on any and all protesters, too, remember. So don’t you speak out because this ISN’T a democracy. People have to have a new mindset. Oligarchy requires it.

    Food Stamps/SNAP will disappear. Widespread starvation will follow with more homeless I’m guessing. But it’s ‘illegal’ to sleep anywhere. How’s that going to work out?

    Crime will increase like it did his first term, but this time any caught in the act will be executed by the cops because…they’ve got total immunity.

    Federal funding for State Medicaid programs will vanish. Especially in the Dem states. Retribution is always justified on them don’t you know? And Federal Law supercedes state laws so expect a federal law to come soon on that. Also for birth control of any kind.

    And worm-eaten brain Jr. Kennedy will be in charge of ‘health.’ No more vaccines. Expect much worse than Covid Pandemic which, to be honest, Biden actually screwed up because it wasn’t ‘economically feasible’ anymore though people were and still are getting sick and dying.

    And disaster aid will go POOF just like it did when he refused federal aid for Calif wildfires in his last term. But worse this time. Way worse because he’ll have MAGGOTS running what’s left of the gutted federal programs. That will probably be privatized as quickly as possible.

    Again, how’s that going to work out?

    Unions? Bye-bye. He’s definitely anti-union! Except maybe cop unions.

    Lots of things we take for granted going bye-bye.

    We thought the Republican ‘Great Recession’ of 2008 was bad? Or the Republican ‘Great Depression’ of 1929? We have 3 times the population of that, but no we are actually going back further in time to the Oligarch’s Gilded Age of the 1890s it looks like. So if you don’t know your history, folks, best read up on it. Get acquainted so to speak.

    I honestly don’t think any of us can be prepared for what Trump has promised to do. Not even his MAGA supporters understand just how bad their lives are going to get. Not the wealthy ones, and his billionaire handlers, but the mas of low-education peons he has anesthetized.

    What happened to the 80 million plus votes Biden got?
    Wondering how any male can vote for Trump if he has daughters or granddaughters.
    It’s all about racism, greed, and toxic masculinity.
    We are officially an oligarchy run by the rich, corporations, white nationalists and right wing christians.

  5. I live in a county that voted for Trump 69%-31%, Shasta County i n northern California. I have been thinking hard about to go forward here.
    After a lot of thought, I came up with this little word mantra to keep me going . . . don’t do depression after defeat; . . . let losses lead to
    lessons; . . .I am grateful to have wonderful friends nearby and far to
    share worries about the times ahead? and encourage positivity when we
    can. ?
    I agree with editordude that resistance will come and will have some successes, but it’s hard to disregard the shitshow our politics/society has developed into the last few years (thanks, Seal, for the great tour of all that). I hope I can make some sense with and to neighbors as the Trump years unfold, if only to point out the ways his election will not solve the problems they hope to see solved. I actually like some of them.
