In these modern times, there are many reasons that will delay the announcement of who won the presidential election come next Tuesday, November 5th. From slow ballot-counting to logistical challenges, we know ahead of time that by midnight next Tuesday, the victor may not be known.
Many of those reasons are reasonable and America will have another safe and secure election.
But we also know Trump. And we know in this temporary vacuum that Trump will declare himself the victor and set in accelerated motion his efforts to stage a coup. Reportedly, he already has “an army” of local election officials who are ready to do his dirty work and attempt to gum up the works of democracy.
So, we need to prepare ourselves for this eventuality and get ready for his deadly shenanigans. He will attempt something akin to the January 6th attack on the Capitol — but it will be much worse.
But if we are ready, then his success will be extremely limited and will fail.
This is more of a psychological readiness than a material one for us at the grassroots. We won’t be shocked or fooled – and neither will the thousands of election officials sworn to uphold the machinery of the republic. Some in law enforcement will also be ready. There are true patriots at every turn of this historic process who will ensure the Constitution will be protected.
That doesn’t mean, however, that the Trump-inspired acolytes will bend over and simply lay down. There will be legal challenges and suits, there may be armed militias taking up positions and there will be fascists ready and willing to fight for their Fuhrer. At many levels.
Part of their plan is to spread chaos, confusion, doubts about the integrity of the election, and fear of the unknown and the “other” which they hope will lead to the destruction of our electoral process and democracy itself.
Truly, America is on the ballot. Our democracy, our freedom. Our rights, women’s rights. Our future – the future of our country.
But there are literally millions of Americans who won’t allow Trump’s coup to succeed. Of course, that doesn’t mean he — and they — won’t try.
The more of us that are expecting this, the more of us that won’t let it be carried out.
And, to all those who say ‘it won’t happen’ or ‘Nancy Pelosi will save us,’ or ‘the next election, not this one, is the one to worry about’, or there won’t be any violence – they are the ones that will be shocked by the lengths that Trump and his minions will go to to attempt this coup. Steven Bannon, long-time Trump advisor, just got out of jail and immediately held a press conference where he publicly urged Trump to announce he is the victor by 11 that night.
All that can be said (has been said) — just be prepared for Trump. We know him. We will be ready for him.
