UPDATE: CAMPBELL WINS DISTRICT 2 – Latest Numbers

With 100 per cent of precincts reporting, here are the final vote totals for District 2 race:

With about a quarter of the precincts yet to be counted, Dr. Jen Campbell is leading incumbent Lorie Zapf in the votes for District 2.

With 74% of the precincts reporting (at this hour 7:30 am Wed., Nov. 7), Jen Campbell has 56 per cent with Zapf trailing with 44 per cent.

That’s 15,300 votes for Campbell and 12,257 for Zapf.

This District 2 race was hotly contested, with millions of dollars being spent to woo voters.

With Campbell’s victory, the Democrats on the San Diego City Council will have a 6 to 3 majority over the Republicans. This means the Dems will be able to over-ride any veto by GOP’er Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Zapf has another feather in her cap by being the first San Diego City Council incumbent to have lost a re-election race.

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.

  1. This is so welcome. We need these Dems to start looking out for tenants instead of developers and they can stop the Miami-fication of San Diego. But, if they are tools to the money-folks and get caught in Filner-esque scandals, then it will cripple the gains we have had to wait five years to earn back. Faulconer is a front-man for big money in the city. The Council needs to propose clear and contrasting alternatives that protect people who are working more and more for less and less.
