The body of as yet unidentified man was found washed ashore in Ocean Beach about 3 a.m. Monday after he had jumped off the OB Pier around midnight.

After a report from witnesses saying a man jumped into the ocean, there was search lifeguards and Coast Guard crews.  His body was found 3 hours later and officials believe it’s the same guy.

San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Alec Phillipp told the press a man in his 40s walked to the midpoint of the pier around midnight, stood on the railing fully clothed, and jumped into the water. He left his boots on the pier. Phillipp reported that witnesses said the man began swimming – did not call for help; he was last seen about 30 meters from the pier when he went under water.

At 2:53 a.m., after the initial search, a person flagged down police and pointed them toward a man’s body that washed ashore. 10News reported that a witness told police the body was that of the man who jumped off the pier.

San Diego police Sgt. Robert Hawkins told the press Investigators were still working the case Monday morning to confirm that it was the same man; it is not immediately clear if the death was a suicide, an accident or something else.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office took custody of the victim to determine the cause and manner of death.
