Donna Frye endorses Bob Filner for San Diego mayor – where are the other big-name Democrats?

in Election, San Diego

Donna Frye was perceived by some Democrats as waiting in the wings as a potential viable candidate for Mayor of San Diego.

Donna Frye, the angel of San Diego’s environmentalists and eco-savy surfers, has come out and endorsed Bob Filner for San Diego mayor.   Donna told Voice of San Diego that she is not running for the office.   Frye’s endorsement should help Filner, as now the deck is cleared for him to run for the office as the only known Democrat.

Frye coming out for Bob raises another question that some are bold to ask:

Where are the other big-name Democrats and why haven’t they come out to endorse Filner?

People like former Member of Congress Lynn Schenk (she endorsed Bonnie early on), Assemblymembers Toni Atkins, Marty Block and Ben Hueso, as well as former Assemblymember Howard Wayne, and San Diego City Councilmember Todd Gloria?

Here’s Liam Dillon’s article from today:

Former San Diego City Councilwoman Donna Frye has definitively ruled out a run for mayor in 2012 and endorsed Democratic candidate Bob Filner.

Frye, a Democrat who failed twice to win the city’s top job, wasn’t expected to try for a third time. But she has a history of last-minute candidacies and, in previous statements, had left the door open to a potential bid. Now, the door is closed.

“I am not running for mayor,” she said in an email to me.

Instead, Frye said she will endorse Filner, a congressman and the lone major Democrat in the race.

It is true that Donna Frye has amassed a turgid following of hardcore Frye enthusiasts, but I am hopeful that she will be the one appointed to take over the Calif. Coastal Commission spot of the gentleman who is soon retiring due to health reasons. Donna would be AWESOME in that role and she could still devote some time to a Filner Mayor administration as someone who helps keep local government “transparent.”

Frank – Donna being CCC ExDir would preclude her doing other things, like working in the Filner administration.

Bill – good point – although I don’t know if she is heading that wave.

Just because CityBeat editor David Rolland said that Donna Frye might run for Mayor never made it true — if that’s who you mean by “some Democrats.” (Nice photo of Donna, BTW.)

Otherwise, it makes perfect sense that Donna would endorse Bob Filner for Mayor. Each has worked for years to improve this community and neither of them has ever sold out their principles — something you certainly could never say about most of the people on that list of what you call “other big-name Democrats.” Not one of them holds a candle to Bob Filner or Donna Frye.

And I agree with you that Donna Frye would be terrific on the Coastal Commission.
