Amikas, a San Diego non-profit organization that helps house homeless U.S. military veteran women, will be raising crucial funds with a fundraising twist on an old-fashion idea – the quilting bee. On Veterans Day, San Diegans who care about our veteran women will have the opportunity to view and bid on antique quilts, provided by Martha Sullivan. There will also be a unique silent auction of quilt squares that will be assembled at the event into a crazy quilt to be displayed in the first Amikas home for female veterans and their children.

The event is Nov. 11, 2011 at 6:00 pm – 9:00pm at the Veterans Museum & Memorial Center, 2115 Park Boulevard (Balboa Park) San Diego, 92101.

A Mexican Fiesta Dinner is sponsored by Microsoft and Able-Disabled Advocacy. Music by “We Kinda Music” and local women poets will perform several pieces pertaining to the struggles unique to women.

Amikas is also looking for donations of the quilt squares for the silent auction. Anyone wishing to create a 12” x 12” square of any pattern or fabric can mail the square(s) or drop them off at Bayside Community Center, 2202 Comstock Street, San Diego, CA 92111 BEFORE the event on Nov. 11th. Each artist will be acknowledged with the quilt.

Amikas helps to match homeless women for shared housing. It’s a simple solution for barriers our veteran families face in finding affordable housing. Since many of these veterans cannot pass a credit check in most rentals, Amikas is hoping to raise enough funding to rent a house for four women and their children, where they can develop a good credit referral along with the life skills they need to be successful as civilians. With the return of our troops from Iraq, this program is more urgent than ever.

Tickets and information about Amikas can be found at
