Imagine my surprise when I found out earlier this week on the Rachel Maddow show that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney registered his domicile for voting purposes as the unfinished basement of his son’s Massachusetts home, a few blocks from the home that the Romney’s sold earlier. She went on to say that Romney also has a home in La Jolla, which is a community of San Diego, and a cabin in New Hampshire. Her guest Fred Karger, who didn’t make the Republican cut for the New Hampshire debate last week, maintains that Romney hasn’t really been living in his son’s basement but rather in La Jolla for the past couple of years and may have committed voter fraud in the Massachusetts election of 2010.
How could that be? Republicans are all over themselves trying to pass stringent voter ID legislation in numerous states and they certainly wouldn’t hypocritically require of others what they aren’t willing to comply with themselves. Perhaps he is suffering from Republican presidential candidate multiple dwelling memory loss syndrome. John McCain certainly struggled with it during his unsuccessful bid for president.
It wasn’t until I read about Romney’s recent trip to Florida that this all started to make sense. When Romney addressed a group there which included the unemployed, he volunteered that he is unemployed too and understands what that means. Here’s this nice man earnestly looking for gainful employment—and he’ll go anywhere, who has obviously been reduced to couch surfing!
We Ragsters understand the difficulties of looking for work, the trauma of losing one’s home and the discomfort of being reduced to moving in with friends, parents, children or taking up residence in one’s car. It’s damn hard just keeping track of your socks and meds, let alone your polling information. You have to give Mr. Romney credit. He manages to keep his shirt and chinos neatly pressed while living in a basement or some cabin in the woods or a house in earthquake country. What a neighbor!

Why does this remind me of the Hon. Congressman whose initials rhyme with Peepee? He Said he lived at his mother’s house up the coast, ran for R. C.’s office, headed to DC and got sworn in before the election was certified.
Yeah, another Republican. These are the same men (!) who want more stringent rules for voting. It isn’t Voter Fraud we should abolish, it’s sleasy politicians on the take from the very companies who imported people to work in the US.

Marilyn- I spent an hour or so today revisiting the crash of Duke Cunningham. I have to admit that I knew nothing, or remember nothing, about the circumstances of Bilbray’s election to fill Cunningham’s seat. Thanks for jogging our collective memory.
