January 8, 1912 – This Day In Our Region: The San Diego Free Speech Fight Begins

January 8, 2008 by Staff

On this day in 1912, the San Diego City Council passed an anti-free speech ordinance, banning public speaking in a large section of downtown, in hopes to bar labor, socialist and other organizers from street-corner speaking. The area was bounded by “C” and “F” streets and Fourth and Sixth Streets. And thus began, the infamous […]

Why San Diego Should Not Be Awarded Anything for Its ‘Bonus ADU’ Program — Not One ADU Unit Has Been Built as Low-Income Housing

April 18, 2024 by Source

By Paul Krueger

Mayor Todd Gloria is bragging about our city’s selection as a finalist for the “Ivory Prize for Housing Affordability.”

“This award honors feasible and scalable solutions to housing affordability,” the Mayor boasted on Twitter/X.

The non-profit that sponsors the awards was equally effusive. “The City has taken ADUs to the next level by allowing homeowners to build additional ADUs on their property, an unprecedented move that allows the City to rapidly increase (its) supply and density of affordable housing,” said Hannah Gable, Director of Strategy and Operations for Ivory Innovations.

But even a cursory Google search would have given Ms. Gable pause about slavishly embracing the City’s willful distortion of the actual results of its “Bonus ADU” program.

Fact is, the Bonus ADU program has utterly failed to provide even one unit of the intended — and desperately needed — very-low or low-income housing.

Just How ‘Successful’ Has San Diego’s Camping Ban Been?

April 11, 2024 by Source

by Marisa Kendall/ Calmatters / April 11, 2024

Politicians pushing to make homeless encampments illegal across wide swaths of California point to one city as proof it will work.

“San Diego gets it,” Senate Republican Leader Brian Jones said during a recent press conference. “They are having great success so far with their ordinance, and we hope we can take that success across the state.” Jones’ proposal, Senate Bill 1011, is modeled after a controversial new San Diego ordinance that bans encampments near schools, shelters and transit hubs, in parks, and even, if shelter beds are available, on all public sidewalks.

But how well is San Diego’s “Unsafe Camping Ordinance” really working?

Muslim Students Need a Different Vibe

April 9, 2024 by Ernie McCray

by Ernie McCray

Well, it seems
that my friend, Lallia Allali,
a renowned leader in the Muslim community,
is no longer
welcome
to tend to the learning needs
of Arab students in San Diego City Schools
ever again,
in spite of the district’s supposed
restorative justice practices wherein it claims
to be about cultivating relationships that help build and sustain
school cultures
that are positive and welcoming
for students, staff, and families.

In Memory of Herbert Shore — November 18, 1939 – February 12, 2024

April 5, 2024 by Source

Herbert Shore was a founding member of DSA in 1982 and San Diego chapter until he passed in February of 2024

by Mark Sherman and Virginia Franco / Democratic Left / March 29, 2024

In Herb’s own words “I was born in 1939 in Brooklyn, New York to secular, Jewish, working class parents. My parents were not actually Communist Party members, but our lives revolved around the ‘fellow traveling’ milieu that existed until the mid 1950s. So you might say I was born into the socialist movement; though no one in my family knew Karl Marx from Groucho Marx.” Those roots stayed with Herb throughout his life.

DOJ Investigation of SANDAG ‘Is Long Overdue’ Says UT Editorial Board

April 5, 2024 by Source

By The San Diego Union-Tribune Editorial Board / April 4, 2024

The recent report that the San Diego Association of Governments is being investigated by the U.S. Justice Department said agency officials weren’t exactly sure what prompted the federal probe. That is in its own way a testament to the fact that SANDAG — the main regional transportation planning agency with a huge $1.3 billion annual budget — has been so awful on several fronts that any might trigger an inquiry.

The latest scandal certainly qualifies. Evidence shows SANDAG wrongly charged up to 45,000 drivers for a toll road they did not use, and an internal inquiry found agency officials knew of the bogus charges for more than a year without telling the agency’s Board of Directors. If a private business knowingly and persistently kept charging people for services they didn’t use, the indictments would be swift and public condemnation would be overwhelming.

Future Design of OB Pier to Be Unveiled at Community Workshop — Saturday, April 6

April 1, 2024 by Frank Gormlie

The City of San Diego is set to show the public what a replacement design for the OB Pier may look like, and is prepping for the unveiling of a final, preferred design concept at a community workshop on Saturday, April 6.

Three potential design concepts for a replacement pier were presented in September of 2023, and the city has been collecting feedback from San Diegans ever since on what they want to see in the new pier. And now city officials are saying the preferred design is an amalgamation of the three concepts, using the public input received to combine preferred features from each design.

The session will be held 2 to 5 p.m. April 6 at the Liberty Station Conference Center, 2600 Laning Road.

Delgado directs medical operations at Culture of Life Family Services, a Catholic organization providing “pro-life medical care and pregnancy clinic services.” Delgado has already made headlines with his “Abortion Pill Reversal” program — a

Midway Rising Developer Gave $650,000 to Campaign to Remove Height Limit in Sports Arena Area

March 27, 2024 by Source

By Alberto Garcia / La Prensa / March 26, 2024

The same developer who gave over $100,000 to elect Todd Gloria in 2020 before being selected to rebuild the Sports Arena site later contributed $650,000 more to remove the 30-foot building height limit around the Midway area, raising questions about the timing of his selection by the Mayor and City Council.

Brad Termini and his wife donated $100,000 to a campaign committee supporting Todd Gloria’s 2020 campaign for Mayor, and Termini and other relatives also gave another $6,900 directly to Gloria’s personal campaign before he won the November 2020 election.

Coastal areas on islands such as Sylt, Borkum and Norderney, which together attract millions of tourists, will need to be rebuilt before the summer holidays — an extensive and expensive procedure.

U-T Editorial Board Disses and Warns Gloria, Gives Props to Turner

March 14, 2024 by Frank Gormlie

About a week ago, the Union-Tribune issued its stance on the results of the just-held Primary and took swipes at Todd Gloria and gave props to the independent Larry Turner, all the while longing for the heavyweight pro who didn’t appear.

For Mayor Todd Gloria, the results are anything but a confirmation of voters’ faith in him.

And the editors rightly acknowledged that the incumbent mayor barely won half the vote, something the Rag did in our recent analysis; this is big; after 4 years a Democratic mayor in a Democratic city and all Democrats on the City Council barely won half the freaking vote!!??

In barely winning half the vote against well-meaning opponents with little mastery of basic issues,

Now, the City Is Thinking About Subsidizing Midway Rising’s Affordable Housing in Sports Arena Redevelopment

March 13, 2024 by Frank Gormlie

After all the ups and downs of the Midway Rising redevelopment team and its promises, San Diego residents now are being faced with subsidizing Midway Rising’s affordable housing part of the project.

For example, just last October Midway Rising dropped the middle-income family units from its redevelopment plan, which angered a number of City Council members.

Originally, in order to obtain the bid for the massive redevelopment of the Sports Arena area, Midway Rising pledged it would build 2,000 affordable housing units. As U-T reporter Jennifer van Grove stated in yesterday’s (subscriber only) article on the matter:

A San Francisco Carve Out Could Wreck California’s Landmark Coastal Protections

February 29, 2024 by Source

By Joel Reynolds and Tom Soto / Los Angeles Times Op-Ed / Feb. 26, 2024

If the coast of California is a state asset worth trillions of dollars — and it is — why is the state agency that has successfully protected that asset for 50 years under assault? The answer — “unnecessary permitting delays” — is unfounded. Yet California’s exceptional history of coastal protection is in greater jeopardy today in the halls of our state Capitol than it has been for generations.

Like water flowing downhill, California’s incomparable coast has always been a magnet for development. In 1972, with this in mind, the voters of California overwhelmingly approved Proposition 20,

Manchester Company Selected by Navy to Redevelop NAVWAR Sued by San Diego for Dumping Contaminated Soil at Landfill

The very company that the Navy selected to redevelop the 70 plus acres at NAVWAR is right now being sued by the City of San Diego for allowing contaminated soil to being dumped at an inactive city landfill and denying it.

Earlier in 2024, the Navy chose Manchester Financial to replace the agency’s obsolete facilities and remake the rest of the 70.3-acre military campus with private development. Its partners on the endeavor are McLean, Virgina-based Edgemoor Infrastructure and Real Estate. You remember Manchester,

Katie Porter Is on a Roll — Thanks to Alabama’s IVF Ruling

February 26, 2024 by Source

By Colleen O’Connor

A February 5th column discussed, “Cherchez La Femme,” the old French maxim: “Look for the woman, by God! Look for the woman.”

That original column predicted:

“Women will determine the outcome [of the coming election]. About that, there is little doubt.  A seismic shift has occurred since the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and remove a woman’s right to control her own body.”

That was then: February 5th. This is now: February 25th.  Less than three weeks after the column appeared, that Cherchez La Femme imperative has exploded, thanks to the recent Alabama Supreme Court’s ruling that in-vitro fertilization is illegal.

‘Shadowy’ PAC and Electrical Union Oppose San Diego Municipal Utility to Replace SDG&E

Should San Diegans have our own municipal utility that would replace SDG&E?

The Power San Diego Campaign believes so.  They’ve launched a signature drive to get the question on the November ballot. On their website, the group claims SDG&E has the highest rates in the nation (although just recently, this has changed), that SDG&E profits are $1 million dollars a day from San Diego City alone, and that 25% of SDGE’s customer are behind on their bills.

Why Northern California Needs Sea Otters Again

February 19, 2024 by Source

The kelp forest’s keystone species could help restore an ailing ecosystem.

By David Helvarg / Los Angeles Times / Feb. 17, 2024

Sea otters are terminally cute critters and a delight to view rolling and diving in the kelp canopy of Monterey Bay, where some 3,000 endangered southern otters play an essential role in maintaining the marine kelp forest. But to crabs, clams, abalone, urchins and some fishermen, sea otters are voracious marine weasels that can eat 25% of their body weight a day — a perceived threat to life and livelihood.

That’s why some lively debates were launched at 16 open houses put on by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last year to get public input on, as the invitation put it, the “potential reintroduction of sea otters to their historic range,” including Oregon and Northern California, a decision that is expected to be made this year.
