The OB Rag is sponsoring a photo contest of the King Tides expected to show up at our coasts beginning Wed., Dec. 21 until Tuesday, Dec. 27.
A generous member of our staff, Kathy Blavatt, has donated $100 specifically for the photo contest. $100 will go to the winning photo with second and third place finishers getting a copy of Kathy’s books, either the one on OB or the one on Sunset Cliffs Park.
There are no rules, except the photos submitted must be of this year’s King Tides from Dec. 21 through Dec. 27– we provide a tide chart below — and that permission is given to the Rag to publish them. Also, photos of the high tides at San Diego Bay and San Diego River are acceptable. Only one photo per contestant. Rag staff will be the judges.

The Tide Chart below (3rd column below) show the December very high and King tides during daytime hours.
High Tides Starting at 5.93. Two days of King Tides a Dec. 23 at 7.51 ft & Dec. 24 at 7.48 ft. King tides from Wed. Dec. 21 to Dec. 27 are very high.

I’m sorry, I just don’t find that top photograph believable. Is that photo manipulated? Being able to walk out almost as far as the cafe on the pier? And where’s that weird shadow on the left side coming from? It looks like a different beach was photoshopped into the bottom half of the picture.
I would think a scene like that would’ve been in all the local news, but I haven’t seen a single additional picture of anything like that at OB.
Show me more pics from other vantage points and I’ll admit I’m wrong!
Photo is real. I took it with a SLR Magic 8mm/16mm full frame equivalent lens on a Panasonic gx85 micro four thirds camera. The shadow is the Pier. Late afternoon low winter sun angle. And yes the tide was that low. King tides are extreme high and LOW tides. Not on news because I did not submit it to any news channels.

What? You forced one of our applicants to f-ing have to defend his photo! ? WTF, dude! You just helped to ruin our anonymous contest by forcing the photographer to identify himself.
I didn’t force anybody to give up their anonymity. I simply asked for additional photos from other vantage points. But as I said, I’ll admit if I’m wrong and it appears that I indeed was. Sorry for being a doubter.
