The Map That Shows Why District 2 Voters Are Upset With Jen Campbell

Above map shows the “No” vote for Measure E in November 2020.

And it clearly demonstrates why District 2 voters are still upset with Councilwoman Jen Campbell. Campbell was responsible for placing Measure E — the proposed elimination of the 30 foot height limit in the Midway — on the ballot.

Looking at the vote from then-District 2, solid majorities throughout the district voted 50% to 56% against the measure. Campbell’s half of Clairemont also opposed in with at least 50″%. Ironically, Midway District voters also voted against it by a majority.

Former boundaries of District 2.

The district’s boundaries have since been moved: PB was eliminated and the other half of Clairemont was added.

The measure did pass — and there’s a long story behind that. It has been since replaced with Measure C, which will be on the November 2022 ballot.

When people asked me how I could possibly support Linda Lukacs, a Republican, over Jen Campbell, a Democrat – the above, factual article is one of the reasons. (And by the way, don’t think it is easy for this life-long Democrat to vote for a Republican – it took a lot of soul searching; a lot of comparing beliefs between the two women – and each time Dr. Lukacs came out on top.)

So you will vote for a Republican in 2022 because her opponent allowed the residents of San Diego to vote on, over the course of the next 30 years, doing something about our housing crisis. Boy that seems like a bad look Judi.

It’s so disappointing to see some in my generation working overtime in our golden years to stop our kids and grandkids from having the same chance to buy a home as we had at their age. I wonder what we would have said if our parents had fought tooth and nail to build out Clairemont or Mira Mesa when we were younger and eventually looking to settle down.

Again, I didn’t vote for Jen in the primary, but at least she’s thinking about what this city’s future will look like instead of putting it in amber (oh and she’s also not a Republican, which is disqualifying from the jump).

You have it wrong. I am voting for one Republican candidate in this election. That Republican candidate who, by the way, is running for a nonpartisan office, is, in my estimation the best one for the position. I have compared what she says she’s going to do with what Jen Campbell said she was going to do. As far as I can tell Jen Campbell has done nothing to enhance this community. I feel that Linda is the best candidate regardless of what party she represents. If I thought that Jen Campbell would do something that would better district 2 I would vote for her. I voted for her once before and have found that her promises amounted to virtually nothing for the community but a great deal for the wealthy construction companies we do not need a 10 story community in the midway area. She is promoting that. Linda has said that without Infrastructure nothing should be done. I agree. I am getting awfully tired of people telling me that by voting for a Republican candidate that I am destroying the Democratic Party. I am voting for the best person for the job. And if there were another Republican candidate that I thought was good I would vote for them too. The Republican and Democratic parties are not what they were 25 years ago. If you don’t vote for the best person then you were just the sheep that were talked about so many years ago. Call

“we do not need a 10 story community in the midway area” so it is about homes for our kids and grandkids, who will live in those homes, as I said above. You’re voting for Linda because in your estimation “doing something” from her is actually doing nothing around the biggest issue that we face as a city, our housing crisis.

Again, I’m so saddened to see people my age who got every opportunity to build wealth and stability through homeownership dead set on denying that for our kids and grandkids.

And I’ve never said you’re destroying the Democratic Party. I’ve said – and will continue to say – that you’re supporting someone who’s a part of a fascist party who is in misalignment with my values on nearly every issue, which is why I’ll be voting for Jen. You can keep saying it’s a non-partisan office till the cows come home but that’s simply not how this actually works (and you know it).

Once again, THERE IS NO HOUSING IN THIS INITIATIVE.

As much as I loath the GOP, not everyone who’s a Republican is a fascist. I don’t know a lot about this person to give any valid opinion, but the fact is there are Republicans out there who are not MAGA red hat wearing nut jobs. If I vote for a Republican to head our MWR office where I work (NASNI) because that person is the best qualified does that mean I support fascism lol? I’m on the fence with 30 ft height limit. I’m not convince lifting it will help anything and I’m not convinced keeping it will help anything either. Jen Campbell ran one one platform and did another after she got elected.

Not every Republican is a fascist, but as the Rep Party drifts closer and closer to fascism I question why anyone is still a registered Rep rather than changing parties to support better candidates overall known as Democrats?
I would never vote for any Republican running today for their party is too far right. 1. The SC members who voted for the War on our Women are far right. Amy Comey Barrett belongs to the extremist cult called the People of Power where only the husband has total say over his wife and children. 2. The Reps are running fascist candidates all across the US who are anti Women. 3. The Rep Party has always wanted to take more money from the Middle and Lower Classes by privatizing all our Social Services like Medicare and Social Security. Privatizing is about making the 1% richer and richer. 4. The Rep Party is anti Worker benefits and rights. I will never vote for another Rep in my lifetime for they are connected to an extremist party.

“Again, I’m so saddened to see people my age who got every opportunity to build wealth and stability through homeownership dead set on denying that for our kids and grandkids.”

Interesting coming from someone who’s part of the Boomer generation (of which I am a part of and I assume you’re part of) since we are blamed for this whole mess (right or wrong).

As I’ve said a few times here and other articles in the Rag, I’m on the fence about lifting the 30 limit along with high density housing. I’m not convinced it will result in lower rents and mortgages. I’m also not convinced maintaining the limit will do that. Instead of expressing how heartbroken you are that people your age want to deny younger generations the benefits of homeownership, why don’t you give a convincing argument about why lifting the height limit will help? And please give a better explanation than “economics 101”.

And do you really think she care’s about this city’s future for any reason other than lining her own pockets? Even her supporters know better. And let’s just say for the sake of argument, lifting the hight limit results in SD getting an abundance of dense high rise housing that results in rents going down, do you really think she altruistically cares about that?

What do you mean by lining her own pockets (I’m assuming you’re talking about Jen)?

Yes (about Jen).

Please tell me how a woman who will be over 80 at the end of her term will be lining her own pockets when she’s out of public service. What would be the possible mechanism to do so?

Like it or not, and clearly many don’t – and again I didn’t vote for her – she’s clearly not in this for a future career or the next step in elected office. She seems to be doing what she thinks is right because clearly, it hasn’t helped her election results. If she wanted to cruise to re-election she wouldn’t have pushed Measure E.

It’s fun to think that she’s doing this for shady reasons or some future payoff but maybe she just believes it’s the right thing to do? Seems like the simplest answer here might be the right one.

Well, then, she’s just plumb wrong and out of step with her district and should step down. Unlikely, yes. Just because a pol thinks it’s the right thing to do, doesn’t make it right.

Whatever happened to voting for the person that will do the best job? People are so blinded by democrat vs. republican that they can’t think clearly. Yes, Trump and the MAGA movement is an abomination, but the same can be said for some of the far left leaning democrats as well.

GML please tell me what the “far left” has done that’s comparable to January 6th, overturning Roe vs. Wade, accelerating climate change, harassing children’s hospitals, everything that happened in Charlottesville, etc. I am truly fascinated how you’re going to both sides this one.

OBPLDem, Measure E/C is NOT a housing initiative. But don’t take my word for it. here’s a line from the 2022 EIR that is repeated about 50 times to address complaints that they didn’t address density concerns:

“The removal of the 30-foot height restriction would not result in a change to total allowable density buildout in the CP area; would not change the underlying base zone regulations, including the base zone’s height limit; and would not allow development to extend beyond the footprint analyzed in the 2018 PEIR. The project would not alter the densities that were approved with the 2018 Community Plan and analyzed in the 2018 PEIR. Traffic associated with the project would not be greater than the traffic volumes previously analyzed and disclosed in the 2018 PEIR.”

This dialogue, while very respectful, is what has gone wrong in the US. Judi wrote that she had done her homework and was voting for a woman she thought was the best qualified. OBPLDem identifies anyone with an R after their name as a fascist and Judy is therefore a stooge and misguided. Jerry Sanders is an R and he is pro choice and pro LGBTQ. Is he now disqualified for office? I hope not. Blindly voting for someone as is bad on the right as it is on the left. By the way, I will vote for Lukcas because she at least had the courage to show up for a debate, something Campbell couldn’t do.

Actually, I think that map shows that between 45-56% voted “no” on Prop. E. That means 44-55% voted “yes.” It really doesn’t say what either group thinks about Jen Campell. It certainly may be a part of the reason, or most of the reason for some people to not approve of her, but that would be for another survey or poll to really make it a ‘clear demonstration’ in my opinion. Great discussion though!

Mike, the point is that most of D2 voted “no” by a majority or more. The measure did pass city-wide.

Reply

Mike September 6, 2022 at 10:19 am

Hi Frank, yes, I get that. My point was that the vote in D2 was pretty close, at least by that chart. So maybe Jen’s unpopularity is due to more than just the Measure E issue, though that is certainly part of it. I feel like the headline “The Map That Shows Why District 2 Voters Are Upset With Jen Campbell” is a little misleading as it is not the whole explanation, and maybe not the biggest one. BTW, thanks for your contributions to OBRag; always worth reading!

Okay, yeah, you’re right. Jen’s unpopularity is due to more than just Measure E – her compromise on short-term vacation rentals is/ was a big part of it. On which issue is bigger, ah dunno. But the D2 communities of OB, Pt Loma, Midway, Bay Ho, Morena, and Bay Park all voted by a majority against the measure E.

kh September 6, 2022 at 9:41 am

Consider that Jen’s 2 biggest “successes” are policies that directly contradict what she campaigned on. Attacking the height limit and legalizing short term vacation rentals in residential neighborhoods.
