I’m gonna miss seeing Marudas on his daily collection trips around the neighborhood. He lived a half block from me since I got my place in 1987. I remember him stopping and talking with me one day when I was working on the front yard. He was obviously a little off but not completely. I remember how he seemed to shrink back some when my wife came out. I heard later that he had a fear of women because of how he was raised. No idea if it was true but I did see his reaction. We saw upheaval in his life many times, lots of lowlifes took advantage of him. But, Jimmy soldiered on collecting his antennas and bringing them home.
It’s people like Marudas who make up the character of OB and when we lose one, like the Spaceman, it feels like an empty hole in the fabric. I hope wherever he is that there are antennas as far as the eye can see. Rest in peace, Jimmy.
Yes, he did seem to have a fear of women, and also of anyone who wore glasses. I remember him trying to convince me into getting laser surgery for vision correction. When told him I couldn’t afford it at that time, he (wisely) pointed out the value of good vision.
That said, he was probably a lot easier to take as the occasional character in the fabric of OB than he was as a close neighbor. Those lowlifes that took advantage of him caused us a lot or problems over the years – drug sales, trash and other nuisances, shooting pellet guns at passing cars, you name it.
When I lived on the 4600 block of Voltaire St Jimmy helped me install a outdoor anntena in the early 80s. Very helpful . RIP Jimmy.
I just happen to be think about Jimmy Marudas and whatever happenened to him…and to my surprise he as passed away. R.I.P.. I remember Jimmy Murudas since I was a little boy living on Pescadero and then on Voltaire Street in the 4500 block and then all the way up to Catalina Boulevard.
He was a humble, harmless, stuttering man where some liked him and others did not. He would like to tell you jokes and had a great amount of dirty ones. He was known as a dumpster diver and some called him a troll. He was know as going through every streets and corners/alleys of Ocean Beach/Point Loma and beyond would say ‘collect trash save cash it’s like Christmas everyday.’ I do remember about the people who wore glasses joke, he would call them P.O.Gs including my mom, ‘prisoners of glasses’, or bras were considered over the shoulder Boulder holders. Or, that the SeaWorld Tower was the biggest jerk off in town. Most of time he would be pushing or riding his bike with a crap load of stuff bringing back home or looking for some goodies along the way whatever you wanted he could find it for you and know where to get it if you were looking for certain stuff. He would always accept whatever you had to offer him whether it was a cup of water, piece of bread or something to eat along his way.
Yea, I’m not trying to minimize how victimized he was over the years and the crap that went on there, I’m as close as you are to his place, my friend, But, through it all, Jimmy continued on, a mentally deficient adult who would have been homeless were it not for his inheritance. I just wanted to focus on him as a person, what went on around him was not him. .
He was Grand marshall at the OB Christmas parade.
I first met Jimmy when I was 11, in 1981. My neighbor girl told me he was just a harmless guy who rode his bike around , picking thru dumpsters. I took that to heart , and made sure to say hello to him or wave whenever I saw him. He did not reciprocate, lol. He would run away or ride off, talking about “risky business!! ” I’m glad I as always friendly to him, and I hated it when his house was taken over by the thugs that I called friends. It makes me so proud of my ocean beach community when I see the love being shown here and on Facebook for what others might call a bum of a problem. We embraced him, and watched out for him. That’s why I’m an obeachian forever!!! Rest in peace, Jimmy!!! I wonder if spaceman came and picked him up?

Hey Michael! Long time! We’re waiting for someone to emerge from the shadows and write it.
So any more info? I knew him since I was a kid and no longer live in the area.
