Wishing a Classmate Would Say “No to Racism”

I got an email from an old high school classmate that read: “Here’s a really good look at the problem of race in America today” in reference to an essay written by L. Todd Wood.

I seriously doubted that it would be a “good look” at racial matters as my old school chum finds pleasure, for some reason, in sending me articles that “prove” how Black people go about trying to fit into American society in the “wrong way” – and every way we try is the wrong way.

But I read the writing anyway, a bit curious as to what an ex-special forces helicopter pilot with a degree from the Air Force Academy had to say.

And right-away I could see where this man was heading as he wrote about how no one around today owned any slaves and how the Jim Crow days were of another day, yet today, he asserts, “Black America, for the most part, is still locked in inner-city gang violence and economic hardship.”

And then he asks “Why?” and further asks “Is it because America is racist or because of some overhanging White supremacy?”

His answer to those questions is “No!”

He lays the blame for Black people’s problems with racism on us, saying we need to stop playing the “victim” and blaming White people for it and it would help, also, if we ceased aligning ourselves with the Democratic Party and the leftist multi-cultural agenda which is “destroying the country” – not to mention that we’ve always blamed the system, not White folks and, unfortunately, the Demos are about the only group who at least half-ass tries to give us a little help.

He feels the problem is one for Black folks to solve alone and that can simply be done by us paring down our criminal behavior so we can get along better with the police AKA: stop going around looking “beastly” and getting ourselves shot or suffocated by “Mr. Do-Right” for trying to sell cigarettes or allegedly buy the same with a fake $20 dollar bill.

Then he warns: “Don’t kneel when my anthem is played” because “too many people died for that flag. You are free to protest but not then.”

And we’d better recognize how good we’ve got it being born in America where we’ve “won life’s economic lottery.”

[Text that was erroneously attributed to Wood has been deleted.]

I can say, though, that L. Todd Wood’s thoughts really do provide a good look at the problem of race in America today, a good look at what Black people have had to deal with from the time we set foot in America up to this very day.

But I just wish my old classmate, in the waning years of our lives, would stop sending me hurtful expositions like this and find a way to rise above our generation’s attitudes about race and become an ally with those of us engaged in the ongoing struggle for equality and, with us, “SAY NO TO RACISM!”

Like the younger generations are saying today.

Your old classmate is a racist and an ignoramus. It’s a tribute to your temperament and tolerance that you still accept his correspondence.

I cried with anger and despair from the moment I read the title Ernie. He will never be an ally, no matter how much we wish it could “magically happen. We lack enough REAL history knowledge in the US to engage in a fact based conversation. Your White classmate reeks of a White privilege attitude, which I’m sure he would deny adamantly.
I have always been told I am an Optimist, but I’m not sure that is true anymore-especially after the recent LONG Trump years.

I’ve been trying to post a link but am unable to. Anyway (if you feel up to the task) you should Google “Will One of You Libtards Show Me How to Work a Podcast?” from satire site The Hard Times. See if he does catch that it’s satire.

Here it is, Chris:

Hey guys… have I offended you by saying, “guys” and not, “respecting your gender pronouns?”

Well tough shit, because I don’t buy into all that PC crap and no one’s gonna tell me what I can and can’t do! Anyway, will one of you libtards help me get the O’Reilly show podcast? Whatever the fuck that means? I got this damn iPhone and I can’t get the thing to come in on here. Someone show me where the antenna is at least.

I didn’t want to have to ask you guys, but I already went to that damn Apple store. The kid that helped me was black (which is fine) and he said something about being a bluetooth. I told that snowflake not to push his goddamn politics on me and I took my business elsewhere.

Somehow, those dumbocrats at the Radio Shack were even worse. The woman manager kept insisting that it was a, “dance studio” now, whatever liberal bullshit that is. I’ve been coming to the Radio Shack since you were in short pants, sweetie, I think I know where I am. Also, it doesn’t look like the store’s doing too good since you took over, either. I’m just saying.

I bet you think this is all really funny don’t you? A working class PATRIOT like me asking some libtards like you to help me with my phone. Big joke right? Your generation is the joke. You believe everything your dumb little social media NPR echo chamber tells you, and you get offended if we say things like, “lame” or if we, “sexually harass women without fear of ramification due to our position as the top anchor at our network.” Bunch of entitled cry babies. Now show me the respect I deserve and help me enter the no spin zone on my phone!

This is my answer to that email. Realize that he will never change his views because if he tried the cognitive dissonance would make his head explode. With what we have learned about the Air Force Academy and what it actually teaches in the last few years, this putrid rant certainly verifies the whistleblowing that has come from inside that awful place. People like him ran through the streets of Tulsa a hundred years ago. Never forget he is the enemy.

And seriously Ernie, block his freaking rants, dude!

The Republican Party Is an Existential Threat to American Democracy

The GOP is increasingly defined not by its shared beliefs but by its shared delusions. This right-wing political party puts us all in peril.

https://www.commondreams.org/views/2021/06/01/republican-party-existential-threat-american-democracy

The greatest danger to American democracy right now is not coming from Russia, China, or North Korea. It is coming from the Republican Party.

Only 25 percent of voters self-identify as Republican, the GOP’s worst showing against Democrats since 2012 and sharply down since last November. But those who remain in the Party are far angrier, more ideological, more truth-denying, and more racist than Republicans who preceded them. continues at link

At a Time When America Faces Cascading Crises, Republicans Just Say No
The scope of what they won’t do is breathtaking.

Chicago Sun-Times

Just say no. That seems to sum up the position of Republicans in the Congress these days. For all the talk about bipartisan compromise or about the two parties working together, at the end of the day, the Republican position is simply to say no.

I’ve never met too many AF grads but I have known a few of their Navy counterparts. I’m sure you’ll disagree with me and probably say you’ve never met any, but there are service academy grads who are not right wing extremists. Some even lean left. Don’t paint them all with one brush.

Yes this former classmate of Ernie’s as a racist POS but he does not represent all graduates of any of the service academies.

Once again Ernie raises a subtle question. How do we deal with friends, relatives, and others when we cannot accept their opinions? An email is one thing; your sister is another. Your next door neighbor is another flavor. As someone said, “Can’t we just all get along?” Or if you want the original version “People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along? Can we get along?” (Yes, I do know who said it.)

There is no one size fits all answer. There will always be people who’s opinions we cannot/will not accept. Personally I deal with it case by case. If someone has flat out racist opinions then I will never get along with nor try to find any common ground with that person. If someone disagrees with me as to just how bad racism is in this country and how to deal with it, I will take the time to better understand why that person thinks the way they do. But that’s me. I can’t tell or should even try to tell someone else how they should feel or deal with the situation. I’m fortunate in that I don’t have any family members who’s politics are different than mine. Living in Hillcrest I can truly say I do not have any conservative (to any degree)leaning neighbors, tho some lean farther left than others. But again it’s not to say how I handle it is how others should. That’s an individual choice. One thing’s for sure. Human beings are going to be human and there will NEVER be a time when we all agree.

You don’t have to accept each other’s opinions on such things to coexist or even be friends. Yes you might not be attending a protest together but it doesn’t mean you can’t have a meaningful relationship. It’s unhealthy to isolate outselves to those of like mindsets.
Step back and find common ground. In the long run it may be more persuasive than starting a debate.

Or maybe I’m wrong. I’ll try confronting my 87 yr old grandmother next time she says something racist and see how that goes.

My heart reaches across the miles to yours as I read your essay. As an ally I struggle with how to communicate with my relatives who think the way your classmate does, but I truly cannot imagine the burden you have carried. Please let me know if there is any way I can support you. I have been blessed by your presence in my life, and your intelligence, kindness, and integrity have served as a shining example of what it means to be a stellar person since I was a 9th grader at Muir 47 years ago. With my respect, gratitude, love and a very big hug, Elisabeth
