September 9th Wednesday 6 pm – 7 pm Nat Talk: Virus Diversity – From Coral Reefs to COVID Hosted by San Diego Natural History Museum Viruses are the most numerous and genetically diverse life forms on the planet. How do we know this? The main method is called viromics, first developed here in San Diego to study viruses in Mission Bay and off of Scripps Pier. Over the course of the last couple of decades, Dr. Forest Rohwer’s lab at SDSU has used viromics to study biodiversity all over the world. Forest’s favorite study sites are coral reefs, currently considered the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet (though the deep sea might win that title eventually!). In this talk, Forest will discuss how we use viromics and other methods to understand coral reef biodiversity, how this viral knowledge might be used to restore coral reefs, and then discuss how these methods are used to understand COVID-19 and other emerging diseases. In June we lost a beautiful soul, Cameron Loren, here in Ocean Beach. He was tragically killed in a hit and run. People now have an opportunity to honor him and help Wild Willow Farm. His friends, Allana and Kate are riding down the Pacific Coast, raising money for Wild Willow Farms – a nonprofit educational farm supplying families with the knowledge and tools necessary to be self sufficient and healthy. While Cam was living in San Diego he volunteered with Wild Willow Farms, a farm that is strongly aligned with his hopes and dreams for the world. Right now, WWF is feeling the financial wrath of Covid-19 and needs our support more than ever!! More info:

They are trying to make this a better world by advocating for all the vulnerable people in the world, for the planet, and ultimately all of us. If you are able to donate that would be appreciated as they are all suffering from not being able to have events or fundraisers.
Issues and Events are changing daily so we suggest you check groups and issues you are interested in for any up-dates. Many organizations are now doing zoom meetings, online events, protest caravans, letter writing and petition campaigns for people to participate in. Also, some environmental groups may start to do their habitat restorations, beach clean-ups, field trips, walks etc.. Check with them and county guidelines.
